That'll teach me to hesitate! Good snag.

Yep, somebody did good. My prewar 99R in 250 will have to be content with David's T7 and a Weaver 29S and not a target scope. grin

A 99 wearing a big old Unertl/Fecker/Lyman/etc. target scope would be a devil of a thing to carry deer hunting, but my-o-my if one wanted to wring out the nth degree of accuracy at the bench.

Hey Gary - are those marked with the model numbers?

Suspect it will be a long time before we see another set...

Top one wouldn't be THAT horrible.. probably better than a 50mm monster they put on rifles now. Though I'd want my scope farther forward if possible so my eyeball would survive..

That appears to be a Lyman 438 Field scope, or else a Fecker Small game scope. Could also be a Lyman 5A. Definitely do-able as a hunting rig, but pretty rare these days. Lyman 438s show up fairly regularly in the $3-400 range. Fecker and/or Unertl Small Game scopes twice that, when they rarely show up. A decent 8x-12x Unertl or Fecker target job will set you back about twice as much as a 3-9 Leupold, if you're lucky, and be half again longer and heavier than the scope in this pic. I know because I just spent the last couple months immersing myself in the market while looking for one to go with a couple of my bolt guns. (Ended up scoring a 12x Fecker 1.25" x 23" long in mint shape for $500 + change. It'll see use on my M52 Winchester and M54 Winchester .30-30.)

Spiegel had 2 special configuration scopes made exclusively for them by Mossberg, Gary had an example of the one with external adjustments at the last fest, I recently acquired one with internal adjustments. I don't know if these were the intended scopes for use on the Spiegel specials, the one I have has very short eye relief and eye position seems very limited, but both have mounts that allowed the scope to slide forward and came with rubber eye cups.

The 1940 catalog pages I have do not have the 99 but they do list several 22 caliber Stevens labeled rifles and list the Stevens 29 (actually 29-A action) as drilled & tapped for scope blocks and available in a combination with a scope (which is why I bought one of the scopes).

Rory, I like the one on top. Now that I have a 99 in each of the Savage cartridges, I was going to try for the Savage Slam, but having my left knee replaced might force me to stretch the Slam out over a couple years. First up was planned to be the Malcolm 22HP, Joe.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

That one is Rick's that he had at the last Fest. That 22HP of yours just has cool written all over it.
