Has anybody noticed that the hex size is odd?

4mm is too small and 5mm is too large

5/32" is too small and 3/16" is too large

I guess 4.4mm (11/64") is the right size, but I can't find one that fits my F.A.T wrench, which uses a 1/4" magnetic bit. I can't even find one that fits a 1/4" socket drive.

What are you using on your Vanguard?

It's not here yet. We'll see when it does. This might help.

There is no 11/64 or 4.4mm, but there is a 4.5mm.

Are you sure it's not a Torx?

I had a Howa a few years ago, put a stock on it and don't recall any trouble finding a bit.

Lots of other threads out there on the google saying they are Torx. Likely a T40. Home Depot should have the bits.

I rummaged around and found a 4.5mm -- that's too big, too.

Wow, if it is a torque, that would explain a lot! I eyeballed it and it looked hex, but as soon as I get home I'm going to check much more closely.

It's definitely a Torx, but it's sure larger than anything that I have in my gun room tools. Guess I'll have to order a bit to fit my torque wrench.

I took a close look at it and it *is* odd. At surface level it is a hex and about 1/2 mm below the surface it becomes a torx. It is a T30.

Yep, Torx 30 is what you need for the Weatherby Vanguard S2 action screws.

Dixie_Rebel - "Torx 30" - looked into the S2 owner's manual. Parts are #46 & 47 BUT no indication of either size or type of fastener/screw/bolt used. You'd think Weatherby would list the size. Homesteader

I agree; one would think Weatherby would list the size in the manuals for us.

I had to call and speak with them on the phone to find out it is a T30.

I took one to the hardware store and bought the Torx bit that fit. Is it common practice for companies to list bit sizes in manuals? Just curious as I don't recall seeing Allen wrench sizes in a Remington manual either.

Highly recommend you guys go down to your local hardware store and buy a complete set of torx and allen keys. Both standard and commie versions.

Two sets of everything is smart.

3 sets of everything is ideal.

One for the bench, one for the toolbox, and one to "lend" to Travis?

One to lose, the other to lose, and the last one to use.

(if you can find it)

deflave - "One to lose, the other to lose, and the last one to use." Really have to take issue with your comment. Guys don't LOSE stuff...it is merely MIS-PLACED. smile Homessteader

Yeah, you can usually find the stuff you 'misplaced' when you go to put its just bought replacement away.

Until I find it, it's lost.

Never really concerns me until it's a gun. That's always frustrating.
