I stopped at Simpsons today and picked up one of these complete with factory scope mount. Looking to play with the High Power, I always wanted one but thought it would be in a Savage 99. Picked up a little Spanish 16ga sxs and another FEG to build into a sxs SC gun.

Now to clean some things out of the safe to make room. Anyone interested in a Bernardelli 12ga/5.6x50R Màg comes with dies, brass and rings.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

My SIL has one of those BRNO 301s with 22HP/12ga. It is a very nice rifle. He got it at a very low price but is having second thoughts about the chambering. I suggested having it bored and rechambered to 30/30 for deer hunting.

Any thoughts?

From the looks of it I don't think there is enough metal in the barrel to go to .30 cal. You might look into going to a 25-35 Win.

70:gr hornadys will make a decent deer bullet. Buffalo bullets makes a full range of .227/8 bullets and S&B has loaded ammo. Mine will be a coyote rig.

It's hard to find someone who will bore and rifle a combo gun. I've looked into it several times, and nobody has the right set up to bore o/u barrels. I was going to have my Valmet 412S bored from '06 to 9,3X62.

...and...

A friend of mine has both 7x57R and 5.6x52R/12 barrel sets, and the 5.6 is a tackholer. It seems a good calibre for small to medium game and pests - similar to a .223 with heavy bullets. The main downside of course being the limited range of bullets available in .227".

Lots of discussion (and dead critter pix) of the .22 Savage as a deer caliber over on the "Savage Collectors" forum if you do a search of previous posts/threads. They seem to know how to kill deer with it. And some discussion of using standard .224 bullets in it. Just sayin'.

I was going to look into shooting some of the Nosler 50gr .224 lead frees in it to see if they will work, plus some of the lighter .227/8's.

I have taken 2 deer with the 22hp both bang flop neck shots! one of my fav cals. the rifle is a savage 99 H, in fact I was shooting some 60 grain cast bullets yesterday, would love to have a combo, or cape gun someday in that chambering!

The 5.6X52R (22Sav HP) is a very good deer round. Especially for a recoil sensitive lady or youngster. I just sold a JP Sauer combo in that caliber & 16 ga. on my site. I thought long & hard about keeping it, but I have to draw the line someplace. The guy says it's a tack driver. I deliberately didn't shoot the gun for that reason. I knew it would be, and I'd want to keep it smile

My HP is a Valmet 312 rig with double triggers over 12ga.It's my favorite.Every gun show I hit up the dealers who always have old ammo-- have found several boxes of Norma HP
I have 200 rounds of 55gr Hp I got from Buffalo ammo--its my version of 243 on steroids!

2400, don't you mean "under 12 ga"? Or is your Valmet different from most? (I'm not familiar with the 312. Not have been imported here as a new gun?).

Well ammunition arrived, rifle arrived and I finally got to the range. HAPPY DANCE TIME. The S&B 70gr rnds proved nicely accurate. At 200 yard I can cover 5 shots with the palm of my hand with three of the shots inside a 50 cent piece. That is with a 1-4x20mm Leupold VX-1 Shotgun scope with very heavy crosshairs. Bonus with the 200 yard zero the shotgun printed a very nice pattern with 4 Buck right on the crosshairs at 40 yards. This should be one great coyote killing machine.

I have a Burris Sig Select 1.5-6x40mm that I think will fit and will try and shrink the group at 200 yards a little.

Now I have to find some 70 gr Hornadys or Buffalo arms bullets, I found a set of Hornady dies on sale.

From the sounds of it, the 'yotes are in trouble now!

Glad that gun is working out for you,

Nice try, I might let you try and shoot a coyote with it in the spring when I come through there. A coyote hunt around there might be fun.

I'm not sure the lead free bullets will pressure swag out enough as the copper and lead bullets do. You may gas cut the throat of that fine old rifle.
