I feel very similar to Blackheart about the 5mm rem. It's a real shame it didn't catch on.

In my home turf there is just not much use for a 17 hmr, its not as effective on bigger varmints and predators as the 5mm or 22 mag and its too destructive on table fare compared to the 22lr or 17 HM2 (the little 17 is hands down my favorite for small game).
I keep a 17 HMR just for when I visit some pals in Montana and shoot gophers and PDs.

I came too late to the party to shoot much of the original 38 grain rem stuff in the 5mm, 3 boxes are all I've ever shot. I've shot a bunch of the 30 grain Aguila stuff though and I like it even better. It shoots great in my 591 and the "white box" is a very tough little bullet while the "gold box" is more dramatic on smaller varmints so you can pick one for the task at hand. Now if I could just get a hold of some more.

For me, it is this:

17HM2 for squirrels
17HMR for pdogs
22LR for paper and plinking
22Mag for 'cats

I like the challenge of calling 'cats and my favorite rifle to take on those safaris is a Remington 597 with 30 grain plastic tipped bullets. In fact, that is where I'm going tomorrow, to hunt 'cats with the trusty 597 along the Platte River in central Nebraska.

I use a .22 mag for most of my hunting. squirrels and rabbits with wrf ammo varmits with .22 wmr. I shoot bull frogs with .22 shorts and subsonic lr though. my next rifle purchase will be a 17 hmr. I love rimfire.

Have you tried the 30-grain V-Max load in the .22 Magnum? I generally do prefer the .22 Magnum to the .17 HMR for larger varmints, whether jackrabbits, chucks or whatever. But then I also prefer centerfires for those animals over the .22 Magnum. Here in Montana we don't have any regulations against using centerfires on public land, as some Eastern states do.

One of the realities of rimfires is if you can't buy ammo, then they're not much good. Which is one reason I like the .17 HMR: It became so popular ammo might be more available these days than any other kind of rimfire, and pretty reasonably, given the performance edge the HMR provides over many other rounds. I usually buy it off the Internet for under $120 a brick, including shipping.

Right now the .17 WSM seems to be making headway, after being introduced at an unfortunate time for rimfires. I just bought one but haven't had a chance to do more than sight it in.

Mule,

What manufacturer and how accurate on the WSM?
