Just bought this ruger m77 stainless laminate 300 win mag and got a leupold 3-9 varix

have been shooting and loading for 270 and 7mm mag got this one with 7mm mag with 150grain partition from about 350-400 yrds.


was thinking about going with a cheaper bullet with the 300 like a core lokt or bonded since the cost less than half of the price of a partition. I never had a problem with them out of the 30-06 270 or even the 7mm. any experience on how they hold up to the power of the 300? Or what are your favorite powders and bullet combo's?

IMR 4831 W/200gn Partition or TSX, 1 grain over max in Nosler's #3 manual. Know of at least 9 300's (win 70's, Rem 700's, 1 Sako 75) that all shoot 1" or some much better with this load. In my rifle TSX's seated to the end of the magazine. Velocity has always been in the 3000-3050 range W/26" factory pipes. 1 cut to 22" yeilds 2900 and shoots lights out.

Don't go cheap on bullets for the .300 win/mag, you will be very disapoited with the performance, and the amt. of blood-shot. I have tried it, save yourself the anguish & learn from others experience.
If you try this load work up slowly, it is hot.
75gr IMR 7828, 200gr barnes x (no data for tsx yet) WW brass, and CCI mag 250 primers.
This load is safe in my SAKO, but I don't shoot it on 90 and 100'f days either. Pressures are definately up with velocity in the 3050fps range. I have shot it on 80'f days with no excessive pressure signs. The magazine & throat allow me to set the bullet out of the case much farther that factory loads.
This load has been a magical death ray for me, have been driving this load for about 8 years, and killed a sh** load of elk with it.

Anybody using H 4831 ????? I have some and am starting to work on my 300 mag loads

I fired thousands of rounds of 300 Win. Mag., and to date my favorite loads are based on Winchester cases, Federal 215M primers, Reloader 22, IMR 4831, or H4831, and 180 gr. Nosler Partitions -- either Protected Points or Spire Points.

Certain lots of Reloader 22 and H4831 can vary somewhat, so follow several good reloading manuals (especially Nosler, Hornady, Hodgdon & Lyman), start low, and work up carefully.

For the most part, Reloader 22 has produced the best accuracy in my rifles over the years, and I've used it extensively in the 300 Win. Mag. since 1994...........

RL 22 is an excellent choice for all three calibers you mention.

I was looking at rl 22 and 19 some of the 22 load are compressed loads. I have never done compressed loads sounds a little scary.

Compressed loads are not scary. I shoot them all the time in competition(well actually thats I used to as I have not shot in a few years) IE read it to say I shot thousands of compressed rounds a year.

Don't worry about it as long as its safe, and the bullet will stay seated at its correct OAL.

You may find that a slow trickle down a funnel with a 6 inch drop tube helps, or fill em up and tap the sides with a bunch of mini taps and the powder will settle.

Don't use cheap bullets. Especially for elk. 180 or 200 grainers of a good designed bullet.

I concur about using the cheap bullets in the .300 for elk. Use them for practice and stay with Partitions or better for hunting.

Here are a few of my loads:

WW brass at 2.610�
CCI 250 primer

168g TSX, 74.5g H4350, 3246fps

180g TSX, 81.3g Retumbo, 2963fps
180g TSX, 81.0g Re25, 3057fps

Best 180g loads:
180g TSX, 70.0g H4350, 3038fps
180g North Fork, 70.0g H4350, 3032fps

Seems like everyone has the same opinion of the 300 WinMag. I used Hornady BTSP 180's for the first year. Shot an average sized doe and was not impressed with all the damage. I was using IMR4350 - 73 gr - Fed 215 - FC cases. Velocity was 3140. Accuracy was astounding, but the bullet couldn't handle the velocity on impact.

I changed tactics. I bought some 168 TSX's and some Nosler 180 Partitions. They both shoot sub minute with the edge going to the TSX. Yah, they're expensive. You also loose less meat to blood shot. One shot kills are the norm even at extended ranges, and weight retention is great. The partitions are good too, but even they lose weight when striking solid bone like the front chassis of a moose.

Anyway, I settled on two loads.

1. 75.0 gr of RL-22 with a Fed 215 primer in FC cases for the 168 TSX. It is NOT a screamer -- 3050 fps, but it is tack driving accurate -- 0.650" at 100 metres.

2. 77.0 gr of H4831sc with a Fed 215 primer in FC cases for the 180 Partition. Moves out pretty good -- 3050 and is still quite accurate -- 0.903" at 100 metres.

Both these loads shoot into the same group at 100 and 200 metres, and have both killed game at 250 metres.

Like the others have said -- in the 300 mag, do not scrimp on the price of bullets. I shoot a couple deer and maybe a moose every year which means I run as many as 3-5 rounds down range hunting. I can live with the added expense. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> For practice, I use Hornady's bullets -- they're cheap, shoot well, and I don't care how frangible they are on a paper target.

Even for deer, I like the 168 TSX. I had the misfortune of shooting at a moving deer a couple saeason ago with the 300 and the TSX. I was aiming in front of the shoulder to compensate for movement at range, and just as the shot was breaking, he stopped in his tracks. Bullet went right through the middle of the on side shoulder, broke a rib jellied both lungs and broke a rib on exit. Deer went straight down. Ate meat to within an inch or so of the entrance wound. Gotta love the Premiums in a real premium cartridge.

I've had good success with hornady 180 gr. sp on deer. I didn't think damage was too bad. I would limit there use to deer though. I'm taking the same rifle to RSA in the spring so I'll be shooting partitions.

I use H4831 and 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips in my .300 for white tail. I know it is alot of gun and bullet but I shoot across some windy valleys and the 180 bucks the wind good for me. My old load was IMR 4350 and 165 grain BT's and they shot very well also but the new load does better at over 300 yards.

70 to 72 grains of IMR 4350 and a 165 grain bullet works great in the .300 Winny.

The best one I have worked up is 71 gr. H-4350, Win brass, Win mag rifle primers and 180 gr. TSX

My Ruger loved 75grs RL22, Fed 215M primer and 180gr H-pills. Would do 1/2" groups all day!

180gr. Partition on top of 75gr. RL22. If your rifle wont shoot this combo, somethin's wrong. RL 22 shines in the 300 Winny
