What's the difference between a 700 BDL and a 700 BDL Custom Deluxe?

When you get right down to it there is only ADL, BDL, and DBM. You have blind magazine, floor plate and detachable box magazines. There are countless versions of each in every imaginable configuration. The CDL, SPS, Sendero, and most Mt rifles are all just versions of a BDL. They made Mt. rifles in SS, ADL configuration and I've seen cheap plastic stocks on BDL's and fancy high gloss Walnut on ADL"s.

I suspect the only real difference between BDL and BDL Custom Deluxe is when they were made and the description at the time.

"Custom Deluxe" is gloss finished walnut. Don't reckon they use white line spacers anymore.

Don't the custom deluxe ones have scroll work on the metal, and different checkering?

Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.

MM, this is my take on it. BDL has come to commonly mean a hinged floor plate, however, that's not exactly what BDL is. BDL Custom Deluxe was one of the grade designations offered. BDL Custom Deluxe had a gloss poly finish, cheeckpiece, and black forend tip. Back in the day (early 80s), there were simply four 700s, ADL (A grade deluxe), Classic, BDL Custom Deluxe (B grade Custom Deluxe), and Varmint Special (which may have been BDL Varmint Special). Both the Classic and Varmint Special also had hinged floorplates. The Classic for example is absolutely not a BDL. And a BDL can have a detachable magazine... But then there's never been a 700 designated ADL which has a hinged floor plate. Then things got complicated, and pretty cool, with Mtn Rifles, RS, KS, European etc etc... Then SS. Then the bead blasted plastic chit where ADL just meant no floorplate and SPS, which has a floorplate, yet sure as hell ain't a B Grade Deluxe (BDL) rifle. And J-locks, Xmarks etc and it's hard to fathom what's coming.... Seems they again offer a BDL Custom Deluxe style rifle but just call it a BDL... So, are they the same? One made by the old Remington and one by the new? I'd go old.

I just wondered because I saw a BDL Custom Deluxe .30-06 at the LGS. It was new and they wanted $850. I was curious if that's the going price on a BDL or if the "Custom Deluxe" made it more pricy.

Times have changed! In 1995 I ordered a new 700 BDL left hand .22-250 and if I remember right it was only $485 then.

My first centerfire, a 700 22-250 BDL Custom Deluxe. I think they were just under $300 and came with a leather sling. Deer killin' sombitch. That is indeed the entrance wound there on the cheek! It was a birthday present, if not X-mas. Dad seemed surprised I was not real surprised when I got it. I'd had it found and inspected many days beforehand. IIRC the sister and I used razor blades to peel the tape off packages to get into them. That's gramps with his 71. Those were the good ol' days.

Nope, although gramps told me that was supposed to happen. Dad, last I heard was selling off the Winchesters. That's why he's edited out of the above pic on the right, LOL. Someday I'd like to get a 71 to have in grandpa's memory. I got to hunt with that rifle a bit in my early 20s but never fired it at game. They're sure dandy.

I bought a new 700BDL in .308, back in 1977, for full retail, $189.99 IIRC. It was under $200, anyway. Complete with leather sling, too.

Yeah, times have changed. I make more money now, too.

Same here, but mine was 97 or 98. It was a 300 WM with engraving for $485.

Back around 1981, J. C. Penney decided to get out of the department store business and go for the yuppie trade. Sporting good were sold off at massive discount, so less than wholesale. My wife worked at out local JCP and said they're selling off a bunch of guns at a loss. I picked up a Remington M700 BDL for $210.95 IIRC correctly. Tag said $359.95. That included another 10 percent off for my wife's employee discount. Being her husband I too got the discount. FWIW, I also picked up a Winchester M94 for $95.00 and a Marlin 336 for $110.00. Sold the Marlin to a friend who uses it to this day. Use the 94 for a cast bullet gun. Never did use the BDL for much more that some cast bullet work and as a loaner to friends. Should do something about that. A whole back I took some 0000 steel wool to that horrible glossy finish. Nice satin look now. Maybe I'll hunt it this winter. My elk hunt starts this December 31. shocked

If you like Remington, and want deluxe with a capital D, then peruse the custom shop offerings here:

http://remingtoncustom.com/HunterGrade.aspx

They cost more naturally, everything with the name custom does, but at least the X-Mark Pro Trigger is tuned and set properly so you don't have to toss it out and buy an after market replacement. My friend had two made, just for fun, but he has more money than sense. I have the remnants of one that was at one time, about 40 years ago, a 40X BR single shot. Wore the barrel out exterminating ground squirrels, and it's on its third barrel. Replaced the trigger a few years ago with a Jewel trigger.

Strange thing about OTC Remington rifles is that sometimes the cheaper they are, the better they shoot. The 788 had a reputation for great accuracy. Now it's the economy 783, mine chambered for .30-06 Springfield will keep groups around 1 inch for 10 shots at 100 yards. I paid more for new M-700 actions than the whole 783 rifle cost. Go figure.
