I've been thinking about a 17 rem, I just can't find anything chambered for it but Re...Rem... Sucks, I guess maybe I just might have to settle for a 204 or 222. The swift I have been using can lead to much sewing from time to time.

Oregon,
Lots of guys over on other sites are reccomending the .17 Rem in a CZ550.....an option to look at if you're interested. I have a BDL and its a pretty nice shooter.....

Have a Sako .222 and its a hell of a gun as well, and I'd really like to shoot a .204 to see how they shoot...

I just checked the CZ web site. The .17 Remington is now available in their model model 527. http://www.cz-usa.com/product_detail.php?id=47

Now Cronk, If I take your advice, and snag a 25-06 for coyotes, how far from the muzzle do I have to let them get, so I don't burn the fur off from the damned muzzle blast:)

JefeMojado,
If you call em in that close, just whack em in the noggin with that hammer you would normally use to finish off those that you slowed down a bit with a .17.

Had a guy come by the shop here sellin' tools, didn't have anything I was needin', so he says, what about guns, had a few left that he was selling (old guy, so I figure they weren't hot) said he had a Sako finlight in .222 that he was willing to part with, fair on the price. Said he would be back the next day to make the exchange, didn't get his ph# & never heard from him again...........life can sure suck at times.
That would have been an awesome calling rifle.

Didn't know the CZ was chambered in .17 Rem. will be looking into it. Pelt price should be up & would like a smaller dose of dead than the swift has been dealing.

The BDL is probably a good shooter, most are, I just can't bring myself to like a R...Re...Rem....Sucks.

OregonTreekiller,
In looking at the CZ site, it apears that the .17 was only recently introduced in their fine rifles. It looks like the .17 is only available in the "varmint" configuration of their model 527. They don't offer their model CZ-550 in .17 caliber.

Okay, just read on another site that premium hunting bullets work great on coyotes with very little pelt damage in the 243 and 6mm. Mentioned, as well, was the 115 parttion in the 25-06.

Anyone tried this or any other premium bullet in the 25-06?

Yukoner,
The nosler partitions should be a good choice for coyotes. If you use the .25-06 mostly as a deer rifle, long range mountain goats etc., the 115-120 grainers would be a good choice. I like to shoot bullets in 90-100 grain class, in hopes of getting a little flatter trajectory. Coyotes are my main target animal. For several years now, I have been using 100 grain Sierra "pro-hunters" and 100 grain Sierra "Gamekings" with fairly good results. As I am typing this message, I am getting ready to clean the grease out of the bore on my new model 700 CDL in .243. I hope to try that bugger out on coyotes yet this winter. A man can't own too many rifles.

Rich ,

Everytime i hear [see] you talking about 17cal stuff it reminds me of a few years ago over at coyotegods -you told johnhenry that you had a bad expierence w/a 17 cal.
You leveled down on a varmint w/your 17 cal ---you were using the cokking lever as a rest and when you pulled the trigger it busted your knuckles good. You were inferring 17's are bb guns-you said those 17's just ain't for me ---now that was funny especially over there.

ol_mike,
I just HAD to come back here and tell you something. I was down there in Arizonia doing a little calling with John, and I gave him a cow horn howler. He called me on the phone later on and told me how his little "taco Bell" looking dog ate the howler.

Appreciate the reply. How tough are the 100 gr PH and GK on hides?

Yukoner ,
I have shot several coyotes with the 100 grain "pro-hunters". Broadside and through the ribs I got maybe 50 cent piece size exits. On lengthwise and quartering shots I couldn't find an exit wound. I love those bullets for coyotes, but I lost a large black bear to one of the buggers. I was shooting down hill at pretty steep angle on the broadside blacky. I think the bullet caught the near side lung but missed the other lung. A black powder hunter found the remains of my bear a couple of months later. The bear had made it about one mile from the spot where I poked him.

hey rich,

do you recall when the owner/mod on that other board was ragging on guys for using .243s and the like, rather than the .17 Rem??? he went on and on about pelt damage caused by the larger cartridges....
same fella was proud of turning loose his airedales on cripples and i got banned for asking how much damage an airedale or 2 causes a pelt..... john w

Banned from yotegods that's hilarious!
Oh sorry i called a coyote a 'yote' that's a big no-no over there.
He's [john henry] probably a good guy but the board is a little odd at times.
I got a real good chuckle just hearing you got banned from there!
It was funny to see the newcomer -totally unknowing ask---> 22-250 or 243 for yotes??
Sorry for sidetracking your post lovessomeshooting!!

johnw ,
I remember that alright. I got banned for a year or so for teasing him so much. John isn't a bad person. I still consider him as a friend. The .17 Remington is one of those calibers that is loved by some and shunned by others. Kind of like religion I guess, ya can't win an argument in regard to either subject. To each his own I say.
