John, just wondering if you've tried it with 150-160's. It shoots so well in the 6.5-06 and '06 AI with 140's it would seem to be a natural but I didn't see any loads for it in the Big Gack.

When I had my 7 SAUM, its favorite load was Nosler 160 Part over 66.5 gr of H1000 lit by a Fed 215. Sub MOA at 2925 ft/sec. 66.5 fills a SAUM case but used a drop tube to compact the powder prior to bullet seating. I like H1000 in a 7mm case of that capacity and bigger. I've had good luck with it in the 7 RM and 160 in other rifles.

smokepole,

No, I haven't, but I intend to, as I'm in the process of putting together another .280 AI. I also intend to try IMR7977, as it's very close to H1000 in burn rate, and Hodgdon lists it as getting a little more velocity. Have been using both powders a lot lately and am becoming very fond of both, but need to pick up some more H1000. Luckily it's becoming more available again.

What I normally do when trying handloads for an article is search all the available tested data for powders that produce the highest velocities with different bullet weights, and also those listed as most accurate. Evidently H1000 didn't make my list the last time I tested a .280 AI, and IMR7977 wasn't around yet, but am going to change that with this rifle.

Over the past couple years have found H1000 to work great with some other cartridges from the .223 WSSM to .300 Winchester Magnum with 180's. IMR7977 has also been very impressive as well, especially with 150's in the .270 Winchester, another indication it should work great in the .280 AI with 160's.

MD,
How is accuracy with the 7977 in the 270 looking so far?

Very good, just like H4831SC with the same bullets.

It's also been good to very good overall with other rounds as well. In fact the more I try all thre Enduron powders the more they're turning into some of the powders I'd regularly reach for when doing any cartridge tests.

The H1000 is/was a favorite in a 243 shooting different 105 gr bullets. Finding the IMR7977 at least as good if not a little better in both accuracy and fps.

The Hodgdon data for IMR7977 is interesting, because it illustrates how the relative burn rate of powders can change in different applications. In some cartridge/bullet combinations 7977 charges are closer to Retumbo than H1000, and in others the reverse is true.

Which is probably relatively few companies publish burn-rate charts anymore. I do know quite a few handloaders who try a powder in one (or at most two) cartridges, then firmly declare, "The company's burn-rate chart is FOS." Just llike they do when some company's loads don't produce exactly the same results in THEIR factory rifle. (Of course, they generally don't use the same case, primer, bullet or seating depth used in the tests.)

Burn charts are just a very general guideline, not absolute.

I found H 1000 a little too slow in my A1 though there may be a little room for heavier charges.
With 150 Nosler BT's 63 grains only got 2706fps.
154gb Hornady and 63gns chronographed 2673fps.
160gn Accubonds and 62gn generated only 2573fps.

Because I was 1-2 grains heaver than Rel 22 charges in the same weights which were generating much faster velocities, I moved on.

Also tried Retumbo but that too, was way too slow for the little A1 in .280.

My Jarrett 280AI is showing a decided preference for RL-19 with 150 grain LRAB's. Like Aussie said, the slower powders just didn't give me the velocities I wanted.

So far, one of mine shoots best with 7828. But 7977 is on the list now too.

I tried every way under the sun to get mine to like 7828 but it just didn't work out. Velocity was there but the accuracy was erratic as hell.

Me too. First group was 3/8" with Partitions. Never did it again.

That'd be great advice if I wanted to shoot 140 Accubonds. Or use N165.

My 280 Ack has always shot the heavier bullets better than the lighter ones and loves the Speer 160 gr FB with H4831. I built this rifle with a Douglas # 2 SS Match Barrel.

Google turned up a number of 62-63 grain loads of H1000 with 162 amax for the 280AI. My 6.5-06 used 53 grains with 160 woodleighs. Hope that is of some help. Need to shoot more 162 amax 7mm bullets on stuff.

I found that 63 grains of H-1000 behind a 140 grain TSX bullet in Winchester case lit by federal 210 primers to be a very good load in the 270 win.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

Anyone try R-23 and R-26? They look promising in similar capacity cases and are in the ball park of the other good powders with burning rates between H4831 and 1000.
