Yeah if you need to have a smith finish it the math doesn't work. I have finished some myself and it has gone well so I would probably do that again.

I have a Vanguard, in a McMillan Edge stock, recently rebarreled by Weatherby with a new 24" stainless barrel, in .270 WSM. With Talley LW mounts, Leupold VX3 2.5-8 scope, original Sub-MOA floorplate and Timney trigger, it goes 7lb. 14 oz., nicely balanced. The stock has been glass bedded and is free floated.

After barrel break-in, it shoots 130 gr. Nosler E-Tips very well.
Shot this group, made a couple of clicks adjustment, flipped over the target, and shot the single, 2.7" high hole, which puts this bullet dead on at 300. It's basically a Howa action, with the Weatherby Vanguard nameplate. Time to slay a deer!

Not arguing that, the big question is #1 can you get a stock from LAW right now and what's the price? I'm sure the majority of stocks being produced are for their rifles and the Howa Alpine rifles. I know Brownell's has some in stock for Remington 700 and Mauser 98 rifles but that's about all I've found so far.

That I'm not to sure on I haven't called out there. The nice thing is I have time to get the project going as I don't really need the gun for about a year or so as I am shooting my 270 now. I emailed McMillan about an edge so I will see what that timeframe is like.

I was able to locate a good deal on a high tech stock on this forum for my Howa project and am going to get my barreled action ordered up here in the next couple days. My plan is to keep it around 7.5 lbs scoped so the question is . Go with a Howa lightweight with a 20" barrel or standard with a 22" barrel? The barrel contour on the lightweight is a #1 and the standard is a #2.

The caliber will be 308 and long range isn't the design idea on this build. I have shot 308 from 22" to 26" but nothing around 20" anyone have any experience with a 20" 308?

Thanks

Lightweight.

You're going to need all the weight savings you can get on that action.

.308 in a 20" is of no concern at all. I have two.

Just updating on this topic since i got the rifle finished and all of the specs that I ended up going with. I was able to get a good deal at my local gun shop on a Howa Lightning 308 for $300 so i started with that and after that bought a High Tech Specialties stock on the board here for $200 got it all finished up and bedded. Was able to find a Weaver fixed 6 scope on here for $110 and dropped it in a set of Talley Rings. All in on this project the total bill was $650.

The weight wasnt the lightest when it was all said and done but the rifle all scoped up loaded ended up being 7lbs 9oz according to a postal scale so I will take it. I plan on shooting it the weekend so if it shoots decent it will make a nice all around hunting rifle.

I have a standard 25-06 I bedded into a B&C Medalist. Accuracy is spot on. It ain't light, but it balances well.
