I have been shooting a similar wildcat to the one you describe. It is an 8mm RemMag case necked up to .338 caliber.
Pushes 225gr TTSX's to 3100fps with ease (89gr of 7828SSC, Fed #215) and without leaning on the throttle at all. This is identical to the speed that the latest Barnes Manual shows for this bullet in the 338 Lapua.
I have use mine quite a bit in Africa myself and loaned it to others on trips over there when they and thier rifle or rifles's ammo did not all arrive at the same time into Zimbabwe. I use it still a lot here and it is a flat out killing machine.

Your talking 338 Win Mag necked up to 357. Yes it's been done. Why not just get 350 Remington Mag, basically then same, not exactly, but close.
Would be much better to neck up the 338 Ultra Mag to 358 and go kill.

to me a .338 WSM would make more sense In re-reading his post, I think that you are right. I was imagining a 358 Norma MAg necked down, which instigated my reply about my 30 year old wildcat which would obviously not be all that similar with the 8mm RemMag case being much longer and larger than the RemMag case.

I had one built on a Rem 700 long action. Use Nosler 180gr BT.Rick.

The 350 Rem Mag is a great case in itself or upon which to build other caliber chamberings. I have a very effective version necked up to .375. I know Ken Water wrote up a 416 cartridge he called the 416 Express which was also necked up. My rifle, originally a Ruger M77 .243 works perfectly with the 350 based cartridge in it. The 338 would be a very good and effective chambering I suspect.

Agreed the 350 is a great case, just thinking of brass availability. The WSM might be easier to get

WSM cases are easier to get, but .350 cases feed reliably in more short actions, often without any modifications. Which is one reason Charlie Sisk and I based the 9.3 Barsness-Sisk on the .350 case.

A .338-350 Mag sounds an awful lot like a .338-'06 since the .350 is pretty much a belted .35 Whelen.

I like to mess with things as much as the next guy....and I am as loonie as most...but if one thinks they need more killing out of a 2.8" case than a .350 can provide...well they need to go shoot some more stuff with a .350 first...lol

That being said the case does nice things in small diameters.....I currently am working with a 6.5 that has my loonie meter pegged.....
