The 300 ultra has been doing well since 1999... it's not going anywhere.

I have a 300 RUM in a Winchester SG which is a heavy rifle. The gun shoots excellent groups with 95gr if rl25 and 200 NP. The MV is 3160. It has a stout recoil but not any worse then a 12 guage with 3.5inch goose loads. Wouldn't own one if I didn't reload.

Its a great cartidge if youre shooting long range but I don't think elk know the difference between an UM and an 06 at ranges I shoot.

Cutlass, I haven't really followed them closely enough to know, and now I'm about to get one of the damn things.... how has brass availability been in general, and what do you guys in the know expect to happen with it? Thanks.

Yup that's the jist of it haha. I had A BDL SS in a CDL stock with a 6X42...with 250 grain full house loads the fixed six was tapping my eye brow from prone and off the bench. I actually found my buddies 21" HTG Stocked 375 RUM more pleasant to shoot. Needless to say it's gone now... But I had to give it a try anyways!

Most of the above confirms what I thought when the RUMs were introduced:

1. Not necessary for 99% (or more) of hunters.
2. Too much recoil for most people.
3. Expensive factory ammo ($57-$88 at Midway today).
4. Limited factory ammo offerings.
5. Remington's 26" barrels are longer and heavier than most hunters want to carry.
6. More powder required than most reloaders want to burn.
7. Expensive brass.
8. Something a lot of people will try and then discard.

As a handloader I don't much care about the cost of factory ammo but I do care about brass cost and availability. While I don't much care if one of my hunting rifles burns 70g of powder instead of 47g, there is nothing I value in a hunting rifle that can be gained by burning 95-100g.

While I can't prove it and have no hard data to back it up, I suspect most people who have bought RUMs are younger shooters and/or people who have had to have one to impress others. That's not to say there aren't people who bought them with their eyes wide open, knowing full well what they were getting into, but I suspect they are in the minority.

I've owned and killed game with the 7mm, 300 and 338 RUMs, all factory barrels. The 7 and 338 were honest half inch rifles (sometimes way better) and the 300 would do moa consistently. Of the three, my favorite was the 338 RUM and it was the last to go. If I needed a rifle in that power range and had a good supply of brass, I'd gladly own another 338 RUM but would pass on the other two.

Jeff, brass is hard to come by. You might have to buy some cheap Remington rounds, they make some that are about $40 a box then reload the brass. I have a good pile of winchester brass but I won't be selling any. Good luck with your build. They're good rounds and recoil is manageable.

1. Same could be said for a 30-06
2. True, but so is popular rounds like the 7mm mags, 300 wsm, 300 winmag, etc.
3. Not any more than the rounds listed above and much cheaper than Weatherby ammo.
4. Lots of factory ammo, from Barnes,Remington, Federal, HSM, Norma and I am sure others.
5. Cut it down to 24". My 24" 300 ultra still smokes 300 weatherby with a 26" tube.
6. Same could be said for many popular magnums.
7. NO More so than any magnum brass. Remington brass is reasonable, but hard to find.
8. Been shooting one since 99. Of course loonies churn through guns and cartridges.

What I see here is alot of speculating by people that have never owned any.

I've had all but the 375rum.

The 7 wasn't much more than my 7stw....down the road it went. The 338 was real accurate, but I had neck surgery, and decided to tone down on the heavy kickers.

Still have my 300rum. It is a one hole gun with 200ab. I killed an 6x6 elk at 450, mtn goat at 350, and a moose at 100 with it. Although the last bull elk I took, was with my 7stw shooting 160 partition. Was only about a 125yards, but it dumped him right on his snoot....

Love the 300rum.

I have a rifle that started as a 7Rem Mag. Later it was rebarreled and chambered to 7-.300 Wea. Then I had it rebarreled and chambered for 7STW. Later it was rechambered to 7RUM. The barrel was 28" long. I gained 25 feet per second with the RUM.

I got old and switched to lightweight rifles. The nearest I have to a RUM is a 6.5mm on a 7RUM case with the shoulder pushed back about .100" giving me a longer neck. I have no idea how fast it will push a 140 grain class bullet with its 26" barrel, but I have 3 boxes of the Hornady 143's on the way. Despite it weighing only eight pounds with a Leupold VX-6 4-24X52 it has a Micro-cell 1.26" recoil pad and a Terminator 3 brake. It is a pussy cat to shoot. I killed four head of game with it last season and saw all hits.

I had lots of trouble getting brass.

P.S. I made a 6.5mm on the RUM case with a 28" barrel for my son-in-law. I loaded Nosler AB at 3,420 with good brass life for him.

I have owned a 300 RUM, a 7mm SAUM, and a 300 SAUM.

In the case of the 300 RUM, I just could not see the need for 90 - 100 grains of powder to launch a bullet to kill deer.

That's not speculation. YMMV.

There are other critters to hunt than deer. A 243 is plenty of small Dixie whitetails.
