6.5-06 or 270 Win. Both are excellent choices, with similar velocities.

Democracy is not freedom. Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to eat for lunch. Freedom comes from the recognition of certain rights which may not be taken, not even by a 99% vote. *Marvin Simkin* L.A. Times (1992)

Not a rageing 06 fan here. But the more of these posts I read, the more I realize I should be. It is never a bad choice, and most times is among the best.

If you don't reload the 30 06 hands down, because of the availability and price of ammo. If you reload, as said above, it doesn't matter.

I think in theory, if you could get 200 grain bullets designed to expand on something as little as deer, the .35 Whelen should be best. At 200 yards this bullet would still be going 2100 fps, which is fast enough to create a shock wave, and you have 4.7" of drop from 100 yards -- little enough to still hold at point of aim.
But the few field reports I've read of the Whelen on deer have been underwhelming -- perhaps the bullets are to blame.
The recoil at 22.6 fp in an 8.0 pound rifle is a little heavy (for comparison a 180 gr. .30-06 load in an 8.0 pound rifle has 20.3 fp of recoil).

Bullet placement with any of them, dead is dead, but in my experience if I'm 200 or less the 35 whelen is a hammer.

It doesn't freaking matter at 200 yards.

Postoak - When I had my 35 Whelen I used the Hornady 200 SP and I had no problems with any lack of expansion (performance). You and others are right it DID hit HARD. This was before Rem adopted the round and began production. The ONLY reason I let it go was the 'scuttlebutt' was DuPont was going to drop IMR 4320. That didn't happen plus we have new powders that work today. Has Hornady changed the structure of the 200 SP ? Jerry

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.
