Thinking of getting an 8hp or a 9.9.

Has anyone had experience with these? I guess they made the Nissan line.

Tohatsu makes Nissan and newer Mercs. Good motors, IMO.

I bought a 9.9 last summer (2015). It's been a great little outboard. I did add an tachometer and an hour meter to mine to help with servicing etc.

Anyway- It's been a good little boat motor.

Those and those re-branded as Mercury are the ones I most often see with the cowling off at the boat ramp. You can get Honda and Suzuki online to save the tax. That's assuming you want a 4-stroke.

I have a 8HP that has worked well for me, but it's only been used for trolling.
I could let it go for a good price.

All smaller hp Tohatsu, Mercury, Nissan and engines are made by a joint venture between Tohatus and Mercury.

In 1987, Mercury Marine and Tohatsu Corporation created a joint venture called Tohatsu Marine Corporation (TMC) to manufacture smaller outboards. Right now all Mercury models 30 horsepower and less are manufactured by TMC in Japan. A Mercury spokesperson told me that the motors smaller than 20 horsepower are generally designed by Tohatsu, while larger models are a collaboration between the two companies. The Tohatsu product line includes motors from 2.5 to 115 horsepower, and it sells the same models under the Nissan Marine brand from its U.S . marketing office in Texas.

Not true. They were still 2 stokes until about 2004 .I had an American made 15 HP 2004,but the question was are they any good.Yes they are.I have a Nissan 30HP.Not the same power as a two stroke, but runs forever on a tank of gas and throttles down for trolling very nicely.

I know for a while they were paired up with Yamaha. That is when they still made or sold Mariner motors.

I have a 9.8 that I bought new in 2011, I use it on a RIB tender to get out to my sailboat on a mooring. It sits on the beach on the RIB for 6 months a year, gets used for 5-10 minutes once or twice a week, often less. Starts on the first or second pull every time, runs quiet and smooth. I bought it because it was the lightest 4 stroke in its h.p. class, but it surprised me with how bullet proof it is. The way I use it can't be good for a motor, and it has been washed over by crashing waves while on the beach, but it just keeps on running.

They are EVERYWHERE in the Virgin Islands and popular in AK, which says a lot to me.

Keep your gas tank CLEAN and run a good fuel water separator and all the major brands seem to do okay.

I have a 2005 Nissan 25 horse 4-stroke on my boat and it's been good in the time I've owned it, but it's my first boat so have nothing to compare it to. I also bought an older Mariner (Mercury) 8hp 2-stroke late last fall. Had it tuned up and gone over at the local shop but haven't even had it in the water yet. I hear they're good motors too.

Good advice but avoiding ethanol is the first defense for a small carb.
