Savage Model 99 250-3000 1915 Take Down Rifle
Some time ago, I read on the Internet information about the early Savage model 99 rifles in 250-3000 caliber. The first in this caliber were take-downs with a Lyman peep sight installed on the rear of the receiver. The information was quite detailed. I cant recall my source, except that it seemed authoritative. Now I cant locate it.
Id like to find this information, since I recently acquired a 99 rifle in 250-3000. It is a take-down with a 22 inch barrel. The rear sight dovetail slot on the barrel has been filled with a filler. Near the barrels breech is stamped 25-300 SAVAGE. The serial number on the bottom of the receiver is 179348, as is the rear of the fore end. I believe this translates into 1915 or 1916.
Attached to the upper-rear receiver is a Lyman peep sight. The base is quite close-fitting, and extends rear-ward about 1-1/4 inches over the wood of the stock. The peep is unique in that the larger peep ring contains a smaller peep ring that is hinged so that it can be used when the shooter wants a smaller opening.
The fore end tapers to a Schnabel form at the tip. The lower edge of the butt stock has a slight but definite perch-belly shape. Both fore end and pistol grip are checkered. The butt plate is steel with milled horizontal grooves taking most of the space between the attaching screws. Below the lower screw is the stamped Savage Indian logo.
On the front of the frame extension, above the lever hinge (I believe called the boss) is a small circle containing the letter H.
Id like to hear more about this rifle, and would appreciate any information. Thanks. Makinster.

what specifically do you want to know? You pretty well have it...
the H above the lever boss is meaningless in this case... just an inspector stamp.
the tang sight was not a standard item, standard would have been a rear sight called a 15WG. Your tang sight is either an Lyman 1A or if it is windage adjustable then a Lyman 29 1/2.
You are right in that this gun is a first edition of the 250-3000 and was the eventual precursor to the 99G.
The trigger should be checkered and the bluing should have a deep luster. It was the real first mass produced model to come with standard checkering... some might want to argue that the 1899CD was but I really don't consider that a standard full production offering rather more of a by order only gun.
They are a desirable model of the 1899/99 if they are in good shape.

The early 250-3000's have more than a slight perch-belly, usually very pronounced compared to the later straight bellied stocks. Here's a picture of Loggah's: Here's some more where you can see the straight stock version:

Also, the first and last one in the pic Rory posted as well as Loggah's gun all have the correct rear sight.

Here's a neat little ad showing off the 250-3000, Makinster. Don't think they'd be printing this ad nowadays.

...and the first model to have a hard rubber grip cap. Perch-belly and checkered trigger were dropped after production started after WWI. Model name was changed from "250-3000" to "99-G" in 1921 at which time they added other calibers in this style rifle.

Makinster, welcome to the forum....much information available here for sure! You may want to buy Murray's book on the 99...it is pretty much the bible in spite of some errors here and there. Post some pictures of your rifle if you can. John
