The first handgun I bought was a High Standard Sentinel. Bought it at a Pawn shop 48 years ago, $42, with holster, out the door.
Have fired many thousands of rounds through it with never a problem. Only screw on the whole gun is the one that holds the grip on.

Probably don't see them much as the owners hold on to them.

I would 2nd the single six vote . I will offer that I have owned 2 different Bearcats and my friend has one. These were all the older guns but all three shaved lead . They were so bad that I wouldn't recommend them at all.

No one asked how much money she has, or why she carries. Or how much she shoots. .22 is thriftiest still, a convertible may just be too much confusion if she is not savvy about the 2 cartridges. Does the heritage have loose screws or a lot of gunk down in the works? May be softer steel worn down.

Any objection to a Mk. 2 or similar?

CCCC: I would recommend a Smith & Wesson revolver (Model 48) in 22 Magnum (I have several of these in various barrel lengths) but they are SO expensive anymore that your neighbor may prefer my second choice which would be a stainless Ruger single six for much less money.
I also have a Snug-Top, cab high canopy on my VarmintMobile.
It has served me well for 20 years now with MUCH harsh treatment (rough roads, off roading, harsh weather conditions etc) - my Snug-Top does have the sliding pass through front window on it.
No cracks in the canopy nor fading of the forest green paint job to date.
Best of luck to you and your neighbor in both regards.

I had a SnugTop on my '03 Toyota P/U that had the rubber seal between the topper and the cab. Worked great, even in the temperature differentials in AK. It did eat the paint up on the cab, but the only way I noticed it was when I took it off to do some 'glass repair. I touched up the paint and applied silicone grease to the seal before reinstalling it and that seemed to cure the issue. I sold it to my neighbor a few years ago and it is still doing it's job.

Kennyd has a point. What is the reasoning the 22lr isn't enough? Frankly I never felt the 22mag offered a lot more than the std 22lr out of a pistol.

Too bad I didn't know of your neighbor before Armijo Springs.

I, and several others, had many variations of 38 specials she could have handled. The Smiths are easy to shoot well with several different 38 loads and the "flash, bang" is much less than the 22 mag.

If you can, try to get her to shoot some 38 revolvers. They can be cheap, accurate and effective to shoot.

Also had several 22lr revolvers for comparison...

Just a little different approach....

Ruger SR22 semi-auto 22LR, loaded with Velocitors. The SR22 is quite inexpensive compared with a Bearcat, and Velocitors are arguably the best of the "hyper performance" 22LR ammo. Not 22WMR, but significantly better than standard 22LR or high velocity rounds such as the MiniMag.

Yes, the Single Six is a sweet gun. One of the nice features is that teenage grandkids can't shovel my ammo through one at warp speed. Wouldn't part with mine. Can't remember the last time I put the Mag cylinder in it.
