Will wrap this up with some of the other critters that came to water.

Marsh Hawk

Immature redtail

Feral Horses - the first time we've ever seen a mare without an accompanying stallion.
Turns out they took about a 1000 out of the region last fall, and hubby must have been captured. Kid looks a little rough but was high spirited. Mom appears to be in good shape.

Snipe do exist

Killdeer

and since we've had a focus on bucks, a switch to a thirsty doe.

Several other songbirds and some vultures, but after raising 5 or 6 young over the summer, they all looked pretty worn out and ratty.

Have a good one,

Thanks for posting the pics 1minute, Cookie really has the eye for great shots!

Going out on a limb but this one is a twin to Tall Boy.

Not sure what he scored but it probably wasn't much.

Weak cutters but a little ivory on the tips and that always counts for something....grin

Healthy, must have been a wet year.

SamO:
Real height there for sure.

A neighboring warden once showed me a seized buck (poached) with 17+ inch horns. No heft though as one could encircle them anywhere with their thumb and adjacent index finger. There really are some radical ones out there. Thanks for the show and tell.

Also, after some investigating, it turns out the fly by was executed by our Moose and Goose boys. Preseason census and herd comp. First pass is usually a total count attempt, and the second is an effort to assess buck/doe/kid ratios. With a bunch that size strung out over almost a mile, it took a few passes to get proper pics and counts. They've gone digital and do the actual counts back in the office. Saves them a ton of time and ups the accuracy considerably.

Bison or buffalo? If we're in Kansas and you told me you saw one, odds would be pretty good that I'd know what one was talking about.

Two rifles checked this AM and both right on the money and ready to go with no adjustments. A 6mm Rem and a 257 Weatherby. Both 2.75" high at 100 yds. Should not need to see any air beneath the crosshairs until I get past 400 yds. Making piles of gear and stacking up the groceries.

Appreciate seeing your nice pictures. Well timed for me, as I head to the Steens on Thursday. 15 priority points for the tag.

We've hunted Antelope in several spots in OR, but the Steens is my favorite. Been going there since the mid-70s.

I'm also a sucker for "Lucite" tips; got a pretty one with almost an inch several years ago.

My 6MM-06 is ready to go. Of course I checked it, but it hasn't moved zero in twenty years. I've never shot an Antelope over 200 yards, but did get a Cal. Bighorn in the Lower Owyhee @ 348 yards.

Best of luck to you --- We'll buy groceries in Burns.

Mr. Larry:

Best of luck. Can't offer any advice on the Steens other than maybe asking permission and trying some of the private ground around the Diamond area. A little pressure can push them off of the high mountain and off of the low ground crested seedings.

I'll be loading the rig Tuesday night, and picking up about 15 blocks and 5 bags of ice Wednesday AM before heading out.

Still hoping I can put Sampson to bed Friday evening and give him a rude awakening Saturday morning. Public ground for me, so the best laid plans......... If not, I'll be good for the duration.

Did a little more Google Earth scouting this morning.

Sure wish one could do this more often, but I get a kick too out of going with others when they pull a tag.

1minute --

We always head to the same spot in the Steens. In 2001 I turned down 55 bucks (many were dinks) and never did shoot one. As I recall, it had been a dry year and horn mass was tough to find. Enjoyed every minute.

Is there any place in Burns with high quality ice, rather than the pressed slush type?

On ice...
One might try the grocery store in the complex just to the right as one hits the first traffic light there by McDonalds. They have crushed ice. Safeway does the hollow cubes that last about 1 1/2 days. I do about 90% blocks, buy them a week out, and freeze them down to about -30 in our chest freezer at home. Gotta have a gin and tonic at the end of these hot summer days.

Best of luck and I hope you get one almost as big as mine,

Those prongs make great eye gougers when they lock up and start shaking their heads.
