John, I've had all but the 30 carbine. All have been superbly accurate. The .256 shot a literal 1 hole group. Amazing. Used a 57 in 22 mag to clear every single digger off my property, without a single miss! Here's my only 56 currently. I think they are the sheit. What's funny is the safety is in the same place as a 99.

I've got 62s in 218 Bee, 256 Win Mag, and 30 Carbine. The 'smith who did the work on the 62 in 218 Bee threaded the receiver and used a recycled Winchester 43 barrel.

I never cared for the triggers, but they were pretty useful rifles. I've always wondered why Marlin didn't make the 62 in 44 Magnum. It seems like that would have been an ideal carbine for woods whitetails.

Had a .22 Magnum that was a tack-driver with the original Winchester 40 grain ammo...would spray the new light weight bullets like buckshot...

Once met a guy at a range who had one of each of the three original calibers {this was back in the late 1960s}, .22 Jet, .357 Magnum and .256 Winchester. Always wanted a .22 Jet to go with my S&W 53 but only saw one other for sale and it brought over $2K....

Fireball...did you also have a Jet?

Don't think you could go wrong with it, shouldn't be too hard to get your money back on it if you decide it's not your cup of tea.

I've got a .256 and I'm still working on finding an accurate load. But it hasn't lost value since I picked it up a few years, so I have no issues with it. It's in good shape, it's a well made firearm, and they aren't making them anymore. All good points. I picked up a few magazines just in case too. Have thought about looking for a "beater" or well used one as a parts gun just in case.

Good luck with your decision,

Geno

Picked up a Marlin 56 not long ago. First year production (1955) with the steel receiver. Quite happy with it.

I got a 22, it was my uncles. Neat little rifle. When I got the rifle it was missing the magazine. I think I found an add in an old Shotgun News from the Clip Joint. It cost me 20-30 bucks back in the 90's.

I have a 57m which is very accurate. Also have a 57 which I just purchased with a broken firing pin. The firing pin is replaced, but haven't had a chance to fire it yet. My LR version has the aluminum receiver. I would like to find one of the steel receiver ones. I expect it will be as accurate as the magnum. I too like the position of the safety, as I am a fan of the Savage 99.

You have a beautiful model 57 Fireball! Also, according to Brophy, the 22 Jet never made it to production.

I have a model 62 in 256. WinMag and a 57M on the way. Neat little rifles.

I'd take an extra 56 magazine if you have one.

I never got the 57M I was buying. The seller was having personal issues and we finally decided to call it a day.

With regard to 256 WinMag, I have the dies but I buy loaded ammo from Reeds Ammo at pretty reasonable prices and keep the brass. https://shop.reedsammo.com/256-Winchester-Magnum_c62.htm

BTW, after being out of town for a few days, I returned and have been unable to log in so I'm here as a new member. I am the same TexasShooter that joined nearly ten years ago. :-)
