Today I sign my life away for my wife's dream home. Anywho the house has a fireplace and I think I want to hang my grandfathers shotgun on the mantle. It's a cheapo Model 10 JC Higgins that was actually recalled in the 50's (The 12 gauges were considered unsafe due to the bolt coming out the rear of the receiver!). Not the greatest gun but the only firearm my Grandpa ever owned and he killed a LOT of birds with it. I am thinking it's probably a good idea to deactivate it in some way as I have kids and kids have friends. If anybody has a fireplace hanger show me a pic I'd like some idea's. So I guess I'm asking if others deactivated their wall hangers and give me some ideas on displaying it.

i have the same gun, picked it up somewhere years ago, still fully active. But i don't think i have much urge to fire it. I would just pull the firing pin out of it.

No. I've never deactivated a gun.

Make a lamp stand and lean it against the lamp.

For years when I was a kid we had an antique .22 rifle on pegs on the wall below the mounted head of my Dad's first buck in our living room. It was not visible from the outside so as not to be an invitation to a break-in.

Whenever returning home, especially from a weekend or vacation away, one glance to see if the rifle was on the wall was pretty certain assurance that our home had not been broken into while we were gone.

Remove the firing pin. And if you want to doubly ensure, remove the hammer. You might be able to store them in the hole in the stock under the butt plate.

I hang my shotgun on the elkhorns by the woodstove. Does that count?

I knew a guy who had a collection of very cheap, very old handguns he put on the wall in a place visible as soon as he opened the front door.

When he got home and opened the front door, if he saw the collection was messed with (or missing), he immediately shut the door and got his shotgun from the truck before entering.

This is a .50 Tennessee Mountain Rifle that I built. Very accurate and I killed 3 deer with this rifle.
It still shoots but I figure nobody could figure out how to load it.

My first gun was a 20 gauge JC Higgins Model 10--a present for my 10th Christmas. Still have it in the closet upstairs. Needs a new bead, I guess--the old one broke off about 50 years ago. I have tried to give it to several members of the younger generations in my family but, so far, no takers.

Kids these days are too sophisticated for their own good...

Kitchen wall-hanger. Made a display board with a weathered board and a couple old horseshoes.

Very nice everyone. thanx for the replies. MM I like the horseshoe idea I might give that a go. Mud hen u should get a bead put on the old shotgun. Yea the 16's and 20's were ok I guess just the 12's were recalled. I guess to this day I could if i wished send it to them and they would give me like a $20 gift card.

I used to work for a guy that shot his fireplace with a 10mm Gold Cup. He was in the habit of clearing it, dropping the hammer, and then re-inserting the magazine. Got distracted one day and punched a hole in the bricks (after punching a hole in a seagull's azz in the picture hanging there).

Or isn't that what you meant by "fireplace gun"?

I have a friend his Dad shot their TV with a POS Astra he was unloading so I'll allow it.

I used to occasionally drop in to check on an older rancher friend (now deceased) when his wife was on a trip somewhere. She always asked me to check on him every couple of days to make sure that he was OK. We usually had a toddy or two while catching up, then he would insist that we put a candle in the big old adobe fireplace. He would light it and we would take turns shooting it out with one of his Colt Single Actions, loaded with mild, soft-cast .45 Colt loads. It was a pleasant diversion on winter evenings.
