From what I've seen it would be the Howa Alpine for me.

I'm in the market myself and looking hard at the Ruger American Predator and the Weatherby Weatherguard S2. I like the stock on the weatherby a lot more but the Ruger is a good $100 cheaper. I've got the Howa, Ruger, and Weatherby in 6.5 Creed. The Howa is the least expensive via Whittaker's at $330 plus shipping, followed by the Ruger at around $375 retail, and the Weatherby at between $500 and $550. I didn't care for the stocks on any of them, but liked the Hogue on the Howa the least. The only differences between the $330 Howa nad the $500(ish) V2 are the stocks and the barrel lengths, the Howa at 22" and the V2 at 24". While I don't love the stock on the RAR-Predator, I don't actively dislike it in the same way that I strongly dislike the Hogue on the Howa. Knowing what I know now, if I was going to buy one of the three, I'd probably buy the Howa from Whittaker's and a Boyds laminated stock in the Heritage style to put the barreled action into. Or, I'd buy the RAR-Predator and buy a Boyds laminated stock in the Heritage style to put the barreled action into. The RAR-Predator in a laminated Heritage style stock goes 9 lbs. with a scope and rings, so not a light-weight, but the balance and handling improvements off-set the added weight on a rifle that doesn't require a lot of vertical movement where I shoot deer. Thanks a lot for the first hand info. I just picked up a Vanguard S2 in 243. I'm taking it to the range for the first time Saturday. Handled the RA Predator at my LGS and didn't like the stock much, but so far like the Weatherby's stock pretty good. After my range session this weekend I think I'll have a better feel for it. There is a thread in the long range hunting forum on sporter weight long range rigs and that's more the type build I'm working towards.

Being LH I settled on a savage package gun in creedmore. Not many choices for a lefty.

I've had the Ruger American Predator and the Howa 1500, both shot excellent. But I wanted a nicer gun that I didn't want to upgrade. The Ruger Hawkeye Predator did that for me. I was skeptical at first because I'm a big fan of Remingtons. This thing shoots out of the box, has an excellent two stage trigger. It also has a little more weight than the other two but balances so much better.

The Howa Alpine has as nice a stock as I've ever tried. The rest is not as nice as a Kimber. For the money of an Alpine I might just consider a Montana. I have a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 CM that shoots lights out. Not as refined a rifle, but definitely a shooter.

Thinking of looking for a donor savage 99 and having it rebarrelled to 6.5, what would be the best caliber to look for Any rotary magazine Savage 99 in 243 or 308 would work with the 260, since the 260 is a member of the 243/7mm-08/308/358 Family. I think that it is unlikely for the 6.5 Creedmoor to feed smoothly through the rotary magazines without a lot of work to the rotor, but it should work fine in either of the detachable box magazine styles of 99, the 99C and 99CD. The sharper shoulder might require some grinding on the "lips" of the detachable magazine, but that it is the sort of handwork that 99s require whenever you attempt to modify them. The 99C/CD are much easier to modify and adapt for cartridges that weren't originally offered in the 99. I've rebarreled, rebored, and rechambered quite a few 99s and all but 2 were done on 99C/CD actions.

I'd take a real hard look at the Kimber Hunter offering. Mine, in 6.5 CM shoots the Whitetail 129 load ( the only thing I've shot in it as yet ) under an inch. I haven't heard of any accuracy issues with a Kimber in quite some time and they claim MOA from there wares now. Mine is sweet!
