The old varix series all looked pretty inferior to my eyes when comparing with any of the newer leupolds. Also the varix3 Ive owned always had a yellowish tint in the view. was most noticeable when compared beside other scopes

At the end of the day, I feel the VX-2 I see easily justified in regards to the price difference. It is a better scope in every aspect compared to the VX-1.
