bellydeep,

Since this is "Ask The Gunwriters," I'd like to quote the title of a book by an older gun writer:

Hard choice to make for me as I like both cartridges, so it would come down to the rifle at hand. If Remmy 700, then 7 mag. Kimber Montana...then 300 WSM.

Never shot an elk with the WSM.. But dozens with other .300's.. Some with the big 7's.. I am a .30 caliber guy, but the 7's are good also, with a bit less recoil..

I think the participation certificate Bill Jordan was referring to was a death certificate

While I cannot appreciate the 7mm Rem Mag, I do have several 7 Wby's that I hold in very high esteem.

The elk won't know the difference; use whichever you have, if you have one.

Or buy the rifle you like best in whichever caliber it is.

Regardless of popular belief, elk can still be killed with non-belted cartridges pretty regularly too.............just sayin'. smile

Of course, YMMV

Maybe I'm more old school than I thought but definately the 7MM Rem Mag

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Not a choice in the question but think a .308 is enough gun.

Reputation aside, I've owned three 7RMs and they were all a peach to load for.

I'm more of a .30 kind of guy, but I just don't like the WSMs. And I don't even have any rational reasons other than the look of the cartridge.

To give the WSM cartridge it's due, I gotta admit that a friend bought one last spring that has turned out to be a real shooter. IIRC he started load development and found a good combo on his first go-round. He took that to colorado for mule deer and scored, so he's happy.

I no longer have a rifle chambered for either cartridge. But, as Montana Man said, find a rifle that you like chambered in either one and buy it. The elk won't know the difference.

That's what I like most about it.
