Anybody tried this bullet in a 300 win mag? Wondering if the tikka 1:11 twist will stabilize it for long range and wondering if anyone has any recipes they'd be willing to share?

The 155 will do fine in an 11 twist. Whenever you want to figure out twist rates, just Google "Berger twist rate calculator,"

Thanks Smoke, trying to figure out what bullets to try for late season longer range elk. Maybe using the .308 and 155 or the 300 win and the 155 scenar, the 165 barnes vortex or the 180 partition for a big healthy cow.

I have some 155's but haven,t killed any game with them. For a starting load I would try I4350 about 74.5 gr. With a CCI 250 primer ..

Think 200 AB or eldx in 200 or 212. Or some old 208 AMax everything you listed is less than desirable in a300 win mag.

I'll look into those, the cow I shot last year at just over 450 yds or so didn't seem to mind the 180 partition traveling at 2870fps (not sure on that velocity, it's what I think it was). It knocked her down and had her slide down the snowy hill making the reaching and removing meat much easier.

If that's the distance you are looking at stick with the partitions

At what distance would you recommend the heavier 200-212 gr bullets?
Thanks, not sure I'd shoot much more than what I've done before, my range has 500m line that I'll go play with hopefully this weekend with the new Tikka. Get it dialed in and see what happens.

Past 400 plug some numbers in a ballistics calculator. It will be eye opening how much the partition bleeds velocity and foot pounds.

You can pencil out lots of bullets that make more sense in the 300.

But I bet if you used the 155 in it you wouldnt be disappointed, they are a sinister bullet.

The extra velocity would close to BC gap to the point of being moot, within 700 yards.

Yeah numbers sometimes don't look great compared to some thin jacketed high BC bullets. But Ive seen and used the 165 gr 30 caliber, 180 gr 30 caliber, and 160 7mm Nosler Partitions used on large bulls out around 500 yards and a couple around 600.

All were killed and some had their legs jerked out like they fell in a hole. You'd never guess it was the same bullet shown in those ballistic tables....

Cartridges? 300 Win Mag, 7 Rem Mag and 30/06.

Question is why? The BC ain't that good.

Try a Sierra 110 grain! Those are faster!!

If there had been a sarcastic icon available about using a 110 grainer....I would have used it!!

A 155 grain makes a lot of sense to me in a 308 Win since I've shot THOUSANDS of them in Palma matches but not out of a 300 Mag...which I don't need!

So the bullet that you've admittedly shot 1000's of, somehow all the sudden sucks with an extra 400fps?

Now I see the logic.

I'd be asking myself how they'd perform on an elk at close and long range with another 400 fps and the additional rotational forces that will come with 300 WM velocities.

Until that question was answered I wouldn't care how many matches they were shot in, or how impressive the paper ballistics were.

Speed vs jacket.... and not to mention 300 means you are shooting long shots, where wind is around, and which means to me personally heavy and higher BC than what 155/168ish offers.

Nope, never shot them.

Have shot 150 ballistic tips out of 300wtby mag. Way to fragile.
Have shot 150 barnes out of same... not as fragile but lots of bloodshot meat and hair blown off which isn't what I was after... FWWI I was given the ammo to try from my BIL, and I kind of knew what would happen, he prefers bang flops and lots of damage and wasted meat....

180 would be the lightest I'd ever run... more like 200 plus these days. run 185 bergers in my 308... they work well at that speed, would not want to push them harder from what I've seen, for my tastes.
