My son shot his first deer on opening morning of the WI gun deer season. He made a great 1/4'ing away shot behind the leg with a perfect heart shot, hitting ribs and exiting the shoulder on the opposite side. She did the heart shot "leg kick" and a 30yd death run. Leaving a few tiny drops of blood in the snow. We never would have seen them on dry ground. He stood at last blood as I circled around. I took about 10 steps and found her laying. I walked up to her and said "I have real good blood here. Come on over." He came around the brush and was all smiles. As we found her. Smilin like heck. Wolf Bait I told him he had to drag it out. But I walked back to the truck to get the Otter Sled and make it a little easier on him. He did pull it all himself. It was about 1/4-1/3 of a mile back to the truck. It was a great morning to be an 11 year old kid. It was a great morning to be a 39 year old dad too.

Awesome! Congratulations to the young man and hat's off to you for helping to make it happen. What is he shooting for a rifle?
Thanks for sharing the pictures. Best wishes to both of you for many more memorable hunts together!

I can look at pics of kids with their deer all day long. Their smile says it all. They dont care , buck or doe. In some ways they remind us what hunting is all about.

You guys make me chuckle. Brings back memories! I shot a buck, my very first solo buck. Went and got my brother that was back in the truck all evening playing some 80's little handheld video game to help me gut and drag it out. Well, I lost my Swiss army knife inside the half gutted buck. We dragged it out. Biggest buck the family got. The ol' 243. deadly on west Texas deer.

Great pic Tz. Well done by a fine looking young man.
Nothing puts the fun in hunting more than watching your own do it. Or any young person for that matter.
Hear is to wishing you guys many more hunts in the future.

The rifle he used is a Rem 700 MT Rifle once .280 Rem. I had one once. It would put 8 rounds under a quarter at 100 yards with commercial ammo. It still will. It belongs to my BIL.

Between remembering my first deer (in WI as well) back in the 70s, and remembering my son's first deer in 2003, you know this thread made my day!
Congratulations to you and your son!!
What country were you hunting? You sure had some great opening morning snow. My favorite deer hunting places in WI range from Marquette County in the south to Vilas and Sawyer Counties.
