For some reason I'm thinking 1983 but don't trust my memory anymore because I'm not talking guns like I used to. I found a nice 1894 44 Mag un-fired that I believe the guy said was made in 1980, I don't want to assume that there is no safety and buy it, so I want to be sure. What say you?

1980 gun you should be fine , I think the safeties showed up around 1983. I'm sure someone else will chime in with an exact date. Hope this helps.

whats the S/N ? I have an '84 357 w/safety.......

so yes......1983 started the safety......

but have since used a safety delete..much cleaner look....

do not let the safety deter you from buying...still a solid rifle

Tikanut, thanks for the link. I'll see the rifle tomorrow and decide.

I picked up the rifle. Born in 1981, no push button safety, very clean. Claimed it was unfired, unfortunately I had promised it to a friend, so he get's it. Oh well, I have one anyway. Got it for $600, passing it on for $600. What are friends for. Thanks for the input.

I'm probably the only Marlin shooter who actually like the safety on the 336. I don't see it as a negative at all.

This is the best replacement for the POS Safety Marlin puts in their rifles

Simple o- ring fixes that safety so it is not movable

It's even simpler to just remove the stock and tighten the screw that holds the safety detent ball and spring in place until the safety is locked down in the off position.

I have only two Marlins with the cross bolt safety. The two, a .218 Bee and a Cowboy were never made otherwise. It only takes one time to aim and only get a click after a perfect trigger squeeze to make you double check things. Lucky for me, the feral goat did not leave and I got a second chance for a head shot at about 90 yards with the Bee.

I prefer no safety, but it does come in handy for unloading....

Only advantage with the safety is the safe unloading feature.....

otherwise Beartooth delete looks & works the best........
