All:

I was at a gun show this last weekend and discovered a Rem 600 Mohawk in 308 sitting in the rack. The gun was in really good shape and the price tag of $400 seemed fair to me. I have too much now so of course I let it slide. Though, when I handled it, it felt like a nice little handy carbine. Anyone hunt with one of these?

Question: Is the trigger guard plastic? Looked like it.

I had a 600 Mohawk and I believe the trigger guard was plastic.
Mine was a .243 and shot federal 80 and 100 gr factory loads very well

They are handy. It is a nice little carbine. Yes the trigger guard is plastic, and they often warp, but there is an aluminum (after market) one available. Wish you had gotten the name of the guy, I would have been interested in the gun.
Thanks

Hey Jeff,

I've got one in .308 and one in .222. That's a good price. Got my .308 from G&H and it's like new.

The trigger guard is a plastic POJ but I replaced them with the nice units from Willie at CVMW. He posts on here.

RAS - glad to see some love shown for this little jewel. I've had one since the mid-70's. Paid $105 at the LGS. Had to replace the trigger guard (see rest of the posters comments)and re-finished the stock to round off the corners. W/O this it carried like a 2X4. Pretty accurate for what it likes in ammo (150 Sierra) and Rem Core-Lokt. Be aware of an awesome muzzle flash when fired at dusk/dawn due to a short barrel. Great jeep rifle. Homesteader

My first year M600, 308 is one of my favorite rifles when chasing bucks in PA and NY and is the epitome of an old school lightweight rifle at 6lb., 6oz. all up. As noted above the muzzle flash/blast from the 18.5" barrel at dawn and dusk is also pretty spectacular....

That was a damn good price. In your old stomping grounds of NC that would of been a $650 rifle.

That would of been a great deal! I have 2 model 600's, one in .308 and one 6.5 Rem Mag. I did replace the plastic trigger guard with the one mentioned which is a great up-grade. They are a handful with that short barrel, especially the Mag:)

Yep, 400.00 was a good price if not beat to crap and the 600 Mohawk without the plastic vent rib is a plus.

Prices on 600s has gone up pretty steadily in the past years. $400 for a Mohawk would have been insane in '06, now not so much for sure. The vent rib Model 600s can double that now. I have a Mohawk 6mm that I paid $150. Put on some nice furniture and it's a sweet rig. I also had a 600 vent rib in 308 and when a guy made me a offer I took it, almost doubled my $. I was so stupid.......

When I told Chad I had bought a 660 350 mag he wondered why in the world I'd want it. After he handled it he saw it was a great bush gun. I put an aluminum trigger guard on it and mounted a Leupold 4x.

There was a guy here on the forum that made and sold Aluminum trigger guards for the Mohawk. Did a good job of it too. Bought one for a pard.

Cant remember who...

I've had a few 600's & 660's through the years, mostly in 6mm. All have shot very well. They're funky little rifles, but I like 'em.
$400.00 was a great price these days, IMO.

The 308 Mowhawk was my first rifle and I would love to find another in good shape. That price was very good. The 308s fetch a premium here

here is a link for the trigger guard:

The .350 mag is very nice, but mine has been looking for a better home, since I rarely even take it out of the case. Yep, 1965 was a very good year. Of course, way back, I bought extra parts from Rem just in case.

The Remington 600 series is one of the handiest rifles ever made IMO and are usually very accurate. I had a 600 Mohawk chambered in 222 that I used for a gopher/PD rifle and meat shoot gun for a lot of years, I won freezers full of meat with that little outfit.

My all time favorite though was the 660, it had a 20 inch barrel and a nicer walnut stock than the Mohawks.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

Shame, shame, shame for walking away from that rifle/price. You would have loved it.

I have bought every one that I've found at bargain prices. Never been disappointed in them. In recent years, I've given them to family or sold them and now only have two. One was a sad, mistreated 222 that had a poor bore. Sent it off and had it rebored and rechambered to 7mmTCU. It is a seriously fun and accurate lightweight now. The other is a 308 that has a slimmed down, reshaped stock and one of my favorite midday walkabout rifles.

I thought $400 was a good deal. Actually, I have seen the guy deal before on his other guns. Maybe being Feb, and on a Sunday, he was willing to let it go, and maybe even cheaper if you show the cash. He will be there next month.

It was at the Gibraltar Trade Center Gun Show in Mt. Clemens, MI if anyone is near there. They have a show there every 1 or 2 months I think.

It is in really great shape.

Traded for this Mohawk. Added a 22" Shilen 8 twist .22-250 barrel, glassed and free floated, Willie's aluminum bottom metal previously mentioned and a Timney trigger.

Nice, handy truck gun that shoots sub MOA. Likes 75 and 80 gr. bullets.

Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 that I sent back for CDS.

Nice.

The trigger position is my only issue, although not a real functional problem.

Just wished it was farther back in the trigger guard.

Question for those with Willies bottom metal/trigger guard on 600 mohawk.

Did you have any issues fitting them,, I ask as the one I have I am unable to do up my 2 original action screws as the screws appear to be to short...

Works fine with the original plastic trigger guard....

Yes, it took some fitting.

My screws worked OK.

Maybe it's not seating fully. More fitting may be necessary.

How much short are the OEM screws?

Trigger guard seats fully into an original stock. Not sure how short bedding screws are, just know that they wont do up. Have tried 2 more original stocks and still the same problem.

Willies trigger guards are certainly well made, heaps better than the originals....

the mohawk is the 2nd variation on the 600 and was a little chintzier but still a nice little gun. 400 is a very good price for a nice one and i'll bet it will shoot like a laser.

Here is the 308 mentioned above. The stock was a sorely abused 660 stock with impressed checkering. I cut maybe 4 inches off and reshaped the end, then sanded off all the checkering and a lot of the other superfluous wood. Unfortunately, even tho the checkering is gone, you can still see the outline of it. I just didn't think I needed to keep on sanding until the dark lines were gone. Then I added a barrel band and a good recoil pad. I really like the results.

Same for me. I had to fiddle around a little with the mag box on my .308 but all it required was a little patience. No modifications were required.

My FIL gave my bride a Mohawk 600 in .308 for her white tail gun when she was 12. She has quite a string of one shot kills with it. I found some bottom metal somewhere, and got rid of that plastic trigger guard. It had warped over time (my bride is 53). The metal one I found was not aluminum and it fit great. Dropped right in. That is a handy little rifle.

I just picked up another Mohawk in 308! It's about in perfect condition. I hope it shoots. The owner said it did.

Also it has the walnut stock and gold trigger.

I own 2 rem 600 mohawks, both in 308. Scarce as hens teeth in NZ, given their age. Couldnt find one locally for years, so ended up importing mine from the US.
One rifle was rated at 99%, is in beautiful original condition. Its a safe queen, never fired it, never will....

Second rifle I imported was rated at 97% from a firearms dealer called Yanke Artifact....97% my arse!! What a disapointment that was. Barrel was full of rust and horribly pitted. Stock had a crack in it in the fore end, .

Honestly dont know how a dealer, knowing full well the rifle was being sent to an exporter to go to another country could be so dis-honest with the cost involved in export/import ....Exporter made the comment when the rifle arrived it was in a cardboard box such as most firearm manufacters use,,, no packaging inside to hold it in place and stop it moving around....

Only decent thing on the rifle was the action. Ive had another chrome-moly barrel made for it in the original contour and length.

Imported a real nice original mohawk stock from the US as a replacement, are turning this into a hunting rifle. Have dealt with some absolutely fantastic people in the US which you couldnt ask for better customer service. The dealer mentioned above was the only sour deal I ve had...

I've been having some issues with the assembly of the magazine, and the function of the block that is in the 222 Rem mag well. Just went through a few iterations with Remington about trigger work they did on my 600. See http://24.172.105.90/z/660 for a photo story. Has a fairly happy ending.

But the fact remains that the trigger guard is plastic, and ugly, and is badly bent on assembly due to poor fitting parts. I scrapped a few thousanths off each side of the plastic last night which helped. But the mag well is not seating properly in the trigger guard, and or the action. As well the spacer is not held high enough to really do it's job of facilitating magazine loading. it's a problem unless you watch the first round go into the magazine.

I've been trying to keep mine STOCK but see that it will be a sub MOA shooter. So am going forward with the aluminum trigger guard install.. Ordered one today.

SO... if their's anyone out there who shares my assembly problem... please tell me what you've done. I played with mine for an hour last night and the trigger guard (plastic) was still deformed when the screws were tightened.

Dave,

I have a 660 in 222 Rem, basically the same rifle as yours. The previous owner had replaced the plastic trigger guard assy with a metal one of unknown manufacture. Of course, shortly after buying it, I had to take it apart to check it out and had a lot of trouble getting it back together again. I decided that since it would be a range/varmint rifle anyway, I bought a single shot follower and installed it. It did take me a long time to get the magazine back together and seated correctly. I don't know if there were parts missing or what, but the magazine didn't seem to want to stay in one piece while placing the trigger guard in place. It's back together now and I won't be taking the stock off anytime soon. It shoots great though.

I have a buddy that went to Germany with the Army in 1980...he brought back two of these that had Mannlicher stocks on them. They came that way from Remington. Personally, I cannot stand that style stock, but I guess Remington made them for the European market??? They are hard to find. I have owned I think at least one of every rifle ever made, but I have never had a 600. I cannot remember the last time I even saw one for sale...or saw one live in person period for that matter. Any ideas how many of these things they even made??? Why were they not cataloged???

Got my 660 in very good condition for $250 from a pawn shop. Talked the owner down because someone had rebarreled it to 22-243 and I convinced him it would NEVER be sold in that configuration. Picked up a 20" takeoff Rem 700 youth rifle barrel in 7mm-08 for $70, one of Willie's aluminum trigger guards, and a set of Conetrol rings and bases for $40 at a Elk Foundation auction.

My gunsmith screwed on the new barrel, full-length bedded the original Rem stock and cerakoted the metal in matte black. The slightly heavier (and slightly longer) barrel give it just a touch of weight-forward feel for steadier aiming, and although I might be imagining it, muzzle blast seems significantly less than another 660 I had in .243 with the 18" barrel. Now I'm trying to decide whether to put on a Leupold M8 6x or a Vari-X III 2.5-8x36 to finish the job!

I don't recall ever having purchased anything from them, but I have heard/read lots of bad reviews of Yankee Artifacts in Northborough, MA, most being that firearms were way over-graded to such a degree that they might have been graded by a blind person. Caveat Emptor!

I have owned I think at least one of every rifle ever made, but I have never had a 600. I cannot remember the last time I even saw one for sale...or saw one live in person period for that matter. Any ideas how many of these things they even made??? Why were they not cataloged???

Remington made the 600 from 1964 thru 1967, the 660 from 1968 thru 1971, and the 600 Mohawk from 1972 thru 1979. The 600 Mohawks were sold through discount and high volume retailers, rather than through gun shops.

I've heard of 600 Mohawks with mannlicher style stocks being sold through AAFES base/post exchanges in Europe, but I've never seen one that appeared to be original or had provenance that would justify the asking price.

I have a few 600/660s, a 6mm and 308 in their original factory specs and four that have been rebarrel/restocked in 22-250, 243, 260, and 308.

Several years ago I saw a M600 in 222 that had been rechambered to 223. Price wasnt bad, heck of a lot cheaper than an original M600 in 223

I have two Mohawks, a .222 and a pristine .308. 260RemGuy helped me out on how to get the magazine in place while reassembling the rifle. I don't remember the procedure though. I think it involved either tape or rubber bands. Anyway, he was spot on as usual. He's extremely knowledgeable.

I probably suggested using a piece of clear packing tape to keep the part together and I'm sure that my knowledge was earned through trial and error.
