I emailed Henry to ask what twist rates they use for various calibers, mostly because I was wondering what they used in the lever actions but also what they will probably use in their new single shot. Here is the reply:
Thanks for the inquiry. The twist rates are as follows:

.357/.44/.45: 1/38

.30-30: 1/12

.223: 1/12

I'm not convinced the twists on the .357 and .45 are correct, I've never heard of anybody using that slow of a twist for those two. But I do see that they use the same 1 in 38 that Marlin uses for the .44 Magnum.

I guess you will have to wait for them to hit the dealer shelves and eyeball down the barrel. It dramatic enough you should be able to see it.

Pretty sure most .357 rifles are 1-16. Lots of 1-38 .44s, probably most because old Winchester .44s were around that. Brian Pearce has been nagging Marlin about this for years, but the new .45 Colt Cowboy he tested, while generally solid, was still 1-38. Thankfully, my Low Wall .44 is 1-20.

As I said in another thread, they replied to my email in May stating that the 223 has a 1-9" twist.

So WTFO.

They'll probably use whatever twist the cheapest barrel supplier uses

Not sure how to take this. More I though about it, it may well explain the conflicting emails.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see when they come out.

In fairness, they wouldn't be the first people to use an old-fashioned twist for a new gun. Or change the twist without telling anyone

This is the info they sent me a bit over a month ago too.

I just replied to the person who emailed me and asked for an explanation of this discrepancy. Will wait to hear what he says.

I posted in the other thread that cabelas and a someone else say 1:9, and two other retailers say 1:10, so yeah, something is up for sure.

12 twist is a deal killer

I have two rifles in 223, with 1:12 twist and they are sub 1/2 moa guns with factory hornady 50 gr ammo. The 223 can make a great varmint gun. If Henry offers a long range, black op's 223, then; let hope they also do a proper 20 ruger for varmint hunters. The 1:9 maybe an ok compromise, given the reality of where 223 is at these days. But; 1:12 would be pleasant surprise. Big surprise, actually.

.223 is 1 in 9.

I wrote back and thanked them for the clarification and at the same time put in a good word for a .30-30 in the new single shot.

I emailed the pres last week to see if the .357 was going to be included, and he confirmed that it was. Good news, as good, reasonably priced .357 rifles have been scarce (sorry, but I don't include the H&Rs).
