I hunted it once. A sea of orange. Didn't hear any shooting either. A guy told me there was an article in "Outdoor Life" about it, and that's what caused the crowds. It's small, as wilderness areas go.

It is beautiful country and worth a recreational backpack trip just to take in the scenery. However, as a wilderness hunting destination, it's not on the top of my list. Highway 145 and the Dunton Road give easy access to two sides of the wilderness area. That's unusual for a USFS wilderness area. Usually they are more remote than that. Since it's so accessible there are lots of hunters. The area is generally crawling with climbers as soon as the spring melt off of snow allows access.

I've been into Navajo Basin, Silver Pick Basin, climbed Lizard Head Peak, and the three fourteeners and I've never seen any elk.

KC's epic climb of Lizard Head is a legend among local climbers.
You have to see pictures of Lizard Head to really appreciate the story of that climb.

Hunted it one day and would agree with the sea, the most frustrated I've ever been hunting Colorado. That being said I passed on a bull, last day of our trip and I was a long way from the truck. But I would not consider going back to hunt to be honest.

Even several years ago in archery season, lots of hunters, very few elk.

No, haven't hunted Hermosa Creek. I bet you will see lots of elk in the Lizard Head in June. We saw lots and lots of elk sign during second season. Wasn't super fresh but not too old either. I've heard there are a lot of archery hunters up there. Guessing they get a pushed out with all that pressure.
