Wife and I went on a little walkabout yesterday and I packed my 22-250 topped with a VX3 3-10X CDS elevation only. We stopped once and I shot a half dozen times at some rocks across the canyon. I adjusted the scope for the range needed and set it back to the 200 yard zero when done shooting.
I'll be damned if when we got back to the pickup, the custom elevation cap was gone. Somewhere along the way the set screws must have worked loose and it dropped off. I went back and retraced my steps, some of the walk was on snow, and I had hopes, but no luck.
Anyway, check those set screws occasionally. Losing the cap had never entered my mind. Fortunately, I have the zero stops so I wasn't lost on where the scope might be set.

Note to self Wonder if Leupold would give you a price break for reordering the exact same cap.

You can bet from now on I'll be keeping an allen wrench in my pack just in case from here on out.
I kinda wondered the same thing about getting another one, but I just don't have the balls to ask for a freebie when in reality I should have checked it for being loose.
I'm glad it happened during the off-season and not on the first day of a 7 day hunt. Live and learn..

I have lost the cap on a Redfield accutrac before. Leupold may cut you a break. I have lost RCBS parts, they send me the part. No charge. They want your business. A free part may get them business!

A little bit of clear fingernail polish on the threads is cheap insurance.

That's surprising. You have to back three Allen screw several turns each to free the cap. If they're tight enough to turn the turret, it's hard to see them backing out that much, but stuff does happen. If Leupold tries to hold you up on the replacement cap, you may want to use the original generic cap and apply ballistic tape. Here's a link. http://customturretsystems.com/DF

Ringworm- Good idea. Thanks.
DF- Yeah, it surprised the heck out of me when it was gone. Thanks for the link on the custom system!

JGRaider put me onto that product. He uses it and speaks highly of it. Price sure beats another custom turret.
And, even if you have a custom CDS or similar turret, you can change the load with new tape.

Note to self Wonder if Leupold would give you a price break for reordering the exact same cap. Update; I finally got around calling the Leupold Custom Shop to order another elevation cap and the nice fellow told me that because I lost the cap and wasn't changing anything he would get another engraved and in the mail. I tried to pay, but he wouldn't even let me pick up the shipping. My mistake and loss, but Leupold covered for it. Great company to do business with.

RCBS is like that too. Tried to get a Dillion part once. They charged me for a piece that RCBS would have sent for free. I won't ever buy their equipment again. It was a piece that broke on a swagging tool.
