In that picture it was a 6x42mm SWFA SS. It now has a 3-9x42mm SWFA SS.

For a straight hunting rifle the 6x42mm SWFA is the one.

10 rounds of Hornady Precision Hunter 143gr ELD-X

What's the OAL on those factory loads?

I believe my factory loads were 2.810" from the Hornady Precision ELD-X and they were jumping .150" or so to the lands in my Tikka CTR but still doing 1/2 MOA 5 shots groups.

Thanks.

I like to start at the factory OAL when developing loads. I figure they did their homework.

More than likely just made it to fit in all mag boxes would be my guess.

On the Howa Alpine I have, the OAL with the fixed mag is 2.880+ and with the removable mag 2.835.

I used the Hornady gauge and the OAL to the lands is 2.9+

I figure I'll work of the removable mag max and see what I get with different powders and CCI 200 primers.

I handled a 308 Alpine Howa at a store and it it was a Creed, I'd have bought it. I liked the stock and overall weight/balance.

I bet it'll settle down with a bedding job. What kind of bases and rings are those? Also, what kind of pack and ear protection?

In the pic it was Weaver bases and Burris XTR rings. It now has a Warne Mountain Tech 1pc Picatinney base. Kifaru DT1 on the jack and Peltor Comm headset.

Sweet and sweetness!

BTW, has anyone weighed the bottom metal vs the plastic and magazine?

I will eventually, buried this week at work. I suspect with the plastic/magazine is lighter?

Glad to see it's shooting well for you also!!! That barrel was a bear to break in! Took 70 or so rounds before it settled down and cleaned up well.

SMACK, out of interest, why did you sell the rifle?

Yesterday, I set up my new Howa Alpine Rifle with a proven 4x Leupold scope in Weaver rings and bases. I LocTited everything in place and let it cure for 24 hours, then took it to the range this afternoon. I zeroed it at 200 yards with 155-grain Hornady American Gunner ammo because that’s what I had on hand.

The rifle as tested: [Linked Image]

First group at 100 yards was 0.625”: [Linked Image]

Rings are higher than I'd like, but I'll upgrade as time goes on. I got a couple of other sub-MOA groups at 200 yards, which was nice. I haven’t shot it any more than this, but I’ll do a series of more complete workouts with it in the next few months and I’ll keep you guys posted as I go.

Yes, it's a 308. Lots of good reasons to get a 6.5 or a 7-08, but I have a ton of 308 stuff on hand, so I went with that.
