I've got a question about barrel contour. In a model 20 with a 22" barrel what contour would you get? Will a #2 balance better at 22" long? Would a #1 maybe balance out better at 24"? Or is a #1 fine at 22" long?
I'll be using this rifle as a still hunting rifle with most close range shots 200yds or less being freehand, any further will most likely be off one knee or a rest.

I didn't like the NULA with #1's that I played with. I like a little weight out front and liked the #2's.
That said I never touched one that had a barrel over 22", and I've never owned one.
If I did own one, it would have a #2 at 21"

Bore size matters but as a general rule I'm in the #2 camp. I've got a 243AI with a #1 contour barrel at 22.5". It balances ok, fairly neutral, but if I was doing it again I'd go with a #2 for slightly more out front. I had a 30-06 with a 24" #2 and the balance was great. Have a rimfire with what looks like a #1 at 21" and the balance is good on it.
260AI currently with Mr. Forbes is going to get a #2.

Freehand, still hunting, short range reads a little weight out front and no 24" tubes.
YMMV
I still wouldn't go longer than 21"

I assume it's 4oz from the action and 4oz for the barrels. I assume the weight listed for the model 20 is with a 22" #1 barrel and a 24" #2. So I would assume the real world difference in weight in a 22" barrel between a #1 and a #2 would be around 2oz. I'm just guessing though. Not enough to make a difference with most rifles but might be enough on a Nula? Melvin says he starts at the front action screw and works both ways from there though, so I'm not really sure it would matter which barrel so long as it's balanced the same, only the physical weight would be different... maybe?

Can only help you with a #1 in 6 bore right now. 6 bore, that thing must kick a little?  My .260 is a #2 at 23" and I'm happy with it. Handles and points well.

Yeah, real trick to get it in a #1 contour...lighter than air....  I requested the same #2 at 23" for a 260. A shop a few minutes from my house can cut/crown with little hassle later if needed.

if the lightest rifle available is your goal go with the #1...if not a couple ounces isnt going to matter much
the rifles with #2 tapers balance great i have two of them at 23 inches

I have a 2 contour on my model 24 and love the way it balances. I've always said that if I were to order a short action from Mr Forbes it would be a 2 contour at 22-23 inches.

I have a number of 20's and 24's and I don't care for Douglass barrels, so I have Melvin use Brux, or Rock Creek #3's and they balance, carry and swing great. Also they shoot multiple bullets and loads great. Gary U
