My results from testing RL 26 in the 280 Rem.

I wanted to get an idea of each bullet weight for RL 26

Ruger No 1-A 22" barrel
Norma brass
Rem primer
Temp 60 degrees
Pro Chrono set up at 10' from muzzle

All bullets were .005 off the lands

I fired two shots for each bullet weight.
Two minutes between shots and 5 minutes between each string.

I worked up to these loads, and I consider them a max hunting load for my rifle.
Absolutely no classic pressure signs for any load listed here.

Nosler 120 BT
RL 26 -- 65.0 grains
3,252
3,236

Nosler 140 BT
RL 26 -- 63.0 grains
3,122
3,144

Nosler 150 CT/BT
RL 26 -- 62.0 grains
3,051
3,072

Nosler 160 AB
RL 26 -- 61.0 grains
2,996
2,959

Nosler 175 Partiton
RL 26 -- 59.5 grains
2,873
duplicate

The 175 load/speed is steep and I will reduce it by 0.5 to 1.0 grain.

Everything but the 120's made a nice little same poi cluster.

Yowza. He's running the 175 about the same speed I run a 139 BTSP with 55 gr of IMR4350. Those are 7mag speeds. Got to be some pressure there.

Yes, and explained that I loaded it down. The speed told me I was high pressure, no doubt.

I went ahead and listed that load as a reference to not go there.

Shot the 280 Rem today 24" KS C LH Rem Cases Rem 9 1/2 Primer. RL 26 powder. 3 shots at 100 yards, 10 F 10 plus wind, 162 Gr Hornady A Max.

Rifle has short throat and tight chamber. New warm battery in chrono. 1 shot each load for velocity.

58 Gr RL 26 3 @ 3.5" 2933 FPS

58.5 GR RL 26 3 @ 1.1" 2967 FPS

59 GR RL 26 3 @ 1.83" 2985 FPS may have pulled 1 shot

59.5 Gr RL 26 3 @ .47" Wow 2998 FPS
[Linked Image]

60 GR RL 26 3042 FPS 1 shot fired for velocity.

Easy extraction no ejector marks Velocitys seems hot going to shoot 59.5 Gr load more with same cases and see how primers and case life is. Initial test shows promise.

Barrel mounted Magnetospeed chronograph, usually shoot 3 for groups and 4th for speed. Then go to 4 shot groups
to see if group holds.

Yes need to check chrono on a different day. Suspect it was fast, or sun interference.

Would love some one run the load thru Quick Load and see what pressures are estimated to be before I shoot the load again.

Target sure shows what gun likes and doesn't. Bottom right group is with my 270 Win 60 Gr RL 26 with 150 gr N LRAB tried crimp and 1/2 turn in. Shot same load with 150 GR N Part .30" at 100.

In QL I need 60.3gr of RL26 to get 2998fps with a 3.330" OAL and 162AM. Pressure is 62k psi.

Thanks, that makes sense chamber is tight, and short throat with a fast barrel. But its 7MM Rem mag speeds and that alone concerns me.

Case head expansion was normal, and no case stretching, primers looked normal.

Reshot my 280 Loads in wifes RH Ruger 280 Rem 22"

RP case, Rem 9 1/2 primer,162 Horn A Max, 59.5 GR RL 26, 3 @ 1.4", 2897 FPS

RP case Rem 9 1/2 primer, 160 GR Nosler Part., 58.5 GR RL 26,
3 @ 1.2", 2899 FPS

7 F blowing 20 plus so shooting poor. Both loads were strung vertical. No signs of any excess pressure.
