I was given 250 hard cast HSM .452 dia. bullets. Does anyone have a pet load for the 460 using them? I have win 296 on hand but not opposed to something else.
Will be shooting them in a 16" Encore barrel.

uncle joe - not sure what velocity these will do in an Encore; I'm shooting a "new to me" X-frame. I worked up a little load today for milder blasting with 300gr cast bullets, using 13gr of SR7625 and a standard large rifle primer in 460 S&W brass. It does 1070 fps avg in my 6.5" barrel, and very consistent. Probably faster in yours.

That load is still in magnum pistol territory at about 700 ft-lb, but is pretty mild for the 460 and blast isn't bad.

I also fired a few rounds of 300gr cast & gas checked over 37gr H110; I didn't get a velocity reading even 10 yards back from the chronograph, it's too scared I guess. This is a full power load, but not max in my gun, factory Hornady, Win, and Federal loads are all hotter.

I started a thread about the 460 in the handgun forum, didn't see yours. Maybe some info will cross over. Here: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth...y_of_you_shoot_460_S&W?#Post11338421

Now I really feel dumb.

The bullets are NOT 300 gr. they are 250 gr HSM round nose flat point hard cast bullet.

The confusion was because I also bought some 300 gr bullets for the 444 the same day and was trying to remember what bullet and what caliber, not a good thing to do at my age especially since my memory is about as long as my wazoo.

Are you looking for full power loads or mild blasting ammo?

I would not recommend those HSM bullets for full power loads in the 460, unless they have a gas check. If they are like most other 250gr cast bullets of that design, they don't, and are intended for the relatively slower velocity of the 45 Colt. You can push them fast, but should expect leading and a significant amount of lead particles in the air after the shot.

I mentioned a 300gr load above with 13gr of SR7625; I ran some more this weekend with the same charge and 250gr cast bullets. That worked equally well; I don't remember exact velocity but they were somewhere around 1150-ish in my revolver.

Thanks for the help
Slow is good. The barrel actually likes 454 casul but I'm trying to avoid the short case long jump and the crud build up.
The primary area I hunt has max shots to 45 yards with the possibility of a good sized bear that I'm trying to talk myself into shooting or not shooting depending on the day and how much I want to work to get it out.
I bought gas checks and will try to find a lube/sizing die to fit them.

In case you're not aware, the bullets would need to have a gas check shank, plain base won't accept normal gas checks.

There is a way to apply thin aluminum gas checks to plain base bullets, I used to do it a lot, but we're really getting away from mainstream bullet casting and reloading there. Those don't normally work well on commercial cast bullets anyway; the alloy is too hard and the thin checks tear easily.

Are these what you have?

If so, they will not accept gas checks; just shoot them as-is with mild loads. I'm with you on the cylinder jump and short cases, I prefer the longer case as well. SR7625 works well for this if you can get it (it's discontinued) but otherwise something like Unique will get the job done too.

Those are the critters I got, guess I'll look for some SR7625 or use Unique. How much Unique have you used?

I would suppose I will be getting a velocity boost in the 16" barrel and more in the 20".

Your experience has been a big help

I've used a lot of Unique in 45 Colt and 454, but have not used it in the 460 yet. There are a number of powders with similar burn rate that will do the job though.

Thanks, you've been a lot of help. I got an e mail yesterday MGM shipped the 20" 460 barrel so I should have it Monday or Tuesday.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Got the barrel and tried a few loads using Hornady bullets but never hit the right combo until yesterday.

About a month or so ago I stumbled on Lehigh Defense web site and ordered some 250 gr "extreme penetration" lead free bullets.

Loaded a few using H110 and they grouped well enough to be optimistic. Plan to load some more using same recipe and go .5 down and .5 up & see what happens.
