All:

I don't think I showed my 1895 here yet. Here are the details.

SN:707X
Has 'JM' stamp on barrel.
Buttstock and buttplate have serial number stamped on it.
Forearm doesn't have any markings, but I believe it is 100% original.
22 inch barrel.
Full buckhorn rear sight. Marbles 65?
I think tang sight is a Savage #18.
No extra holes on gun anywhere.
No cracks in the wood or metal.
Everything works great.
The best part, nice clean bore and head space is fine.
The gun is very useable. I would love to bag a buck with it.
For a genuine 1895, it is a tight gun and a real gem.

Thinking about selling it. Just not there quite yet.

Nice rifle. Thanks for posting!
Would be nice to know if it letters as 22".
A few more pics of the fore would be interesting too.

I will try to get more photos when I can.

The bore on this gun is the best I have seen out of any gun under 90,000. Vast majority of them are dark. This one is pretty darn shiney. It is a great, usable hunting rifle.

Anyone hear of one?

None in 30-30, all in 303 Savage. Nice gun, I'd love to see a pic of that with a deer or three.

I think that's why we tolerate each other so well...there's bound to be at least one good story underneath all the rough exterior.

For those that have an 1895, how much space is between the rear sight dovetail and the receiver?

FUG1899,

Just like mine. Thanks.

Remember you saying that you got a 71 in 33?

Well, there is a possibility that a Savage 1895 was factory chambered in 30 WCF. wink

And it is also possible that it had a 22 inch barrel.

In the 1895 catalog it list Sporting Rifles from 26-32"barrel and Carbines in 15" and 20" in 303 and .30 cal.U.S.Gov. In the 1897 catalog it list Sporting Rifles
26-30" Carbines in 20" and 22" also 303or .30cal.U.S. Government Smokeless Power NEVER SAY NEVER.

In 1895 the .30 U.S.Gov't was the .30-40 Krag, which later became .30 Army when the .30-06 came out and was given the .30 Gov't moniker. I don't see how they could've shoehorned a Krag cartridge into the Savage.

I'll bet if some weisenheimer dangled enough money in front of the Savage folks in 1895-1898 they would've done one up in the then new .30WCF (.30-30).
