I'm curious if Remington has finally worked all the kinks out and started producing quality 336 30-30 or should I just look for an excellent condition older model Marlin?

they're supposed to have worked all the problems
out, but i'm assuming they didn't fire the QC
inspectors which would be what i would have done first.
on the other hand, folks seem to want too much(to me)
for older marlins of any condition.
if i were shopping i'd look for a nice new one from
a dealer. at least you can have a warranty on it and
get a refund if nothing else.

I've had 2 pretty recent 1895s. Fit and finish was as good as the rifles made 10-15 years back. I'd try to avoid those made near the transition but I wouldn't have any particular concern about the current ones. No reason a 336 would be any different. Making sure that you're getting a newly made gun, not an older gun still in inventory, might be harder. My opinion only, of course.

Bought this new about 7-8 months ago. As nice as any Marlin that I've ever owned over the years. Shoots and functions fine.

Good. I may try a new one as long as they've got a decent trigger and good fitting.

What am I looking for in serial number on the gun to know if it's a recently made fun and not old stock from when they were having problems?

Just beware of 'Ilion NY' stamped on barrel....the 'JM' stamp

I just got a 2017-born 336Y. The metal portions are perfect, and I love the black nitride finish compared to the old high-gloss blue. But there are obvious gaps in the wood fit up against the receiver both fore and aft. On the other hand, the Remington laminate wood stock is gorgeous. It's a woods gun, not a trophy, so I can live with the flaws. Mechanically it's just fine cycling action dummies but I have not shot it yet.

Most of my Marlins are JM. I joined MO back in 2004. Even then they were complaining about various guns. Then Marlin went through a period where it took a lot of hand work, and they didn't get them all perfect, but the equipment was worn out. Remington ended up being a pea in a pod, and found out just how bad the equipment was. They had to start from scratch. it took a while but all reports and the couple I've had seem fine. It doesn't matter what web sites you go on. Smith, Ruger, Marlin every one of them would lead you to believe the guns aren't worth having so buy and old one. Frankly the truth is in the middle. They all make the majority of their guns very well. Do some slip through the cracks, just like vehicles. I ran into one Fotis was selling. No one would buy it because it was a REMLIN. OH NO. I talked to Fotis and even though it was brand new he loaded up the magazine and ran them through and gave me the A-OK. I got it for $370. So for you nay sayers who have driven the price down on Remlins, I just want to say thanks for the good deal. The other side of the coin, is if someone is selling a JM, which may or may not be a good gun, or made when the equipment wasn't performing well, the prices people want for them are a kings ransom. Glad I've got mine. I don't believe I will be buying any more. Personally I believe that Remington is going to put out a product that will dramatically reduce the prices on the JM's. Which is good, because currently it's hard to actually get a kings ransom for them. Nobody wants to pay that much. Pawn shop 30-30's that used to cost $250-$300 no longer exist. Bad news is if you get a bad JM there is no warranty on them. If you get a bad Remlin I've heard several stories of people getting their money back. Check out any gun you buy carefully. There are no guarantees in life.

ya no kidding. i have one and i wouldn't take less than 1500 for it. actually, i wouldn't even sell it unless i needed a liver or something.

I used to have a bunch of JM's. Now all I have are Remlins. They've been fine thus far and I'm picky.

as a gun dealer ,some of the older marlins just may always be worth a little more ? like the 45-70 guide rifles or the 444 Marilin lever ?

They are just fine. At least the ones I have bought.

Glad to hear Remlin quality has improved. Hope they bring back the 444 although I already have a few JMs.

I've had (have) two new Remlin 30-30's- 336BL and 336W w/ scope- both purchased new this year and both problem-free w/ the limited diet of Hornady LE 160gr I've fed them. My only complaint... well, not a complaint, per se, more of a preference... is that I prefer the BL over the W, to that point that I went ahead and scoped it, too.

So, be looking for a near-new scoped 336 to hit the Classifieds soon... only has about 10 rounds thru it...

I am also pickey, therefore all nine of my Marlins are JM. I don't like the finish and will not own a plywood stock. I have seen a few that were fitted pretty good.

Looked over a couple yesterday.
I actually like the new matt finish though I can't qualify how it wears in the field.
Have owned, tested and used a lot of them since the 1895 was reintroduced in the early 70's. Always liked them, but tended to swing .458 or .460 when I wanted the bore for the power.
