Hello Ironbender,

While it's been MANY years ago, I use to go to the BLM Mustang horse sales in Rock Springs, WY. and Delta, UT

https://www.blm.gov/adoptahorse/index.php

Back in the day it cost $25 Today I think that it's $125

I think that I bought about 20 of them as a high school kid. Broke em, sold em, and did it again.

Been several years, but we enjoyed it for the atmosphere if nothing else. Several characters hanging around in 1800's styled garb etc...
They did have some nice horses go through, and I believe Jake Clark might have run some of his mule's through.

And on second thought, the mule sale I'm thinking of might have been a different venue:)

Got the brochure (not sure how) and don't recall any mules.

Fair number of draft crosses, though no real interest in them.

Just wondering if anyone has been as we are toying with the idea of going.

Ironbender as a rule I'm not one to recommend auctions but if you're considering it might want to look at Billings sales as well.

Ditto.

I'm not much of a horse person anymore. But the rep on the billings sale is as good as it gets for a consignment horse sale.

Thanks. We have an 'agent' with a good reputation at the Billings sale now with instructions. We'll see how that turns out.

Good luck with that IB. If you pick one up let us know and share your fun. Might want to hedge your bet and get some xrays Monday morning while still covered.

Got a 6 yo blue roan gelding. Well-broke, well-used ranch/hunting horse. Good conformation/soundness, but Don't give a whit about color, but it's there.

Critter is for my wife. She talked to seller on the phone this am. Got videos of him being ridden. This agent has gotten horses for other people we know here and has an excellent rep.

Looking forward to getting this gelding up here.

Thanks fellers.

Ironbender,
That Irma sale in Cody is a pretty high priced event. Sounds like you found what you were looking for in Billings. Good luck with the new mount.

Been to the Cody sale. I know a few of the regular sellers. Can be pricy ,depending on the horse and who is bidding on it. The draft crosses are bringing some money. The day before the sale the horses are ridden and roped off of at a arena and you can ride them as well.Fun to attend and drink in the Irma.
I hear the Billings sale is a good one and it can get pricy too. Heard of a grade mare bringing $20,000.
Sounds like you have a nice horse going to a new home.

Top horse last year was $36K! Certainly not what we were looking for in terms of price and training. Didn't want a reiner, header. heeler, or any other performance horse.

Mostly trails with some arena work, but just for fun and recreation. #1 is that the critter be 100% bombproof and reliable. This guy should be that.

As anyone around horses knows, all one has to do is say "a horse can'/won't do that'; then just sit back and watch! smile

It's a horse, not a Honda or Toyota, eh? wink

Appreciate all the comments.

So, which sale did this horse come out of? Billings or Cody?

Do you know who the consignor was?

Hip number?

Matthew-
He was at Billings. Cody sale is May 13.

We know consignor (wife talked to him on the phone) and hip #. just don't have it at my finger tips right now.

Do you know some of the sellers?

When I posted, was hoping John (mtrancher) would add to this. I believe we are done buying horses for a while!

I know folks who occasionally consign there.

Friend runs that barn. His son and mine are in the same grade here and show in 4H together. Their family is a client of mine.

I always thought the post-Thanksgiving sale in Salmon was the place to buy a horse if you didn't mind carrying him through the winter.

No sir. Lots of paperwork. Fella is hauling 4 or more total - just takes some time getting ducks straight.

Expect in the next week. Spousal unit is anxious! Me too.

Very nice. Glad he arrived with no mishaps.

I'd call him a bay roan as well. Color doesn't make much difference to me either, but lots of folks look for his color. Enjoy him!

The Hancocks (imo) have that shoulder angle going into the strong loin/back and particular hip and tail set (ok, and head). I suspect that if that pedigree is researched that boy is going to go back to Hancock a bit. The 2 eyed Jacks I've seen tend to have a rounder hip (just imo, what do I know). I actually was very partial to the jacks NE neighbor, the Jae Bars. Rode a lot of Leo Question breed horses and had a lot of luck with them. Weren't for everyone, but you'd wear out your jeans before you rode one down.

Yes Sir. Leos Question, by Leo (double breed Joe Reed) and out of an own daughter of Question Mark who if I remember right went back to Plaudit (sp?)
Had about a dozen or more of Leos Question grand daughters, lot of horse all of them. That was when Mr Wilkins was still alive.
