Any special tips I need to be aware of in reloading for my Model 100 in .284? Thanks...

Only different thing I do is use a Lee F/C die. Don't know if it's necessary.

Ditto that. I factory crimp all calibers I load. Not a bench shooter! Lol

Just me - but I wouldn't.... I'd suggest only factory ammo in that rifle..

Interesting comment. May I ask why you feel that way?

I'd handload for that rifle, but be careful to not use max loads. Your extractor will thank you. Trust me on this one... wink

My limited experience with the M100 is two.

A .243 of my late father's. Had to use small base dies when handloading. Never could get it to shoot better than about 4MOA, handloads, factory, whatever. Turns out it had a bent barrel from the factory. You could see it when you looked down the bore. My dad bought it new and he took good care of his guns. He damn sure didn't bend it. Traded it for a used M100 in .308. (My father liked M100s way more than me. Maybe because he shot left handed.) Yes, I was straight up with the dealer about the barrel on the trade. Honor is worth something.

A friend now owns the .308. It has now has extraction issues. Not sure when it developed them. My dad was a "one shot, one dead deer" kind of guy. For all his love of the M100 it might have been doing that for a while and he didn't care.

If you don't listen to Redneck, at least listen to BSA, and you might have to go to small base dies.

Two things I find about factory .284 ammo. It's hard to find and very expensive. I loaded for my brother's Model 100's in .243, .284 and .308. They all did their job and shot minute of deer or better. I never got him to shoot half way seriously off a bench. I did make the mistake trying to use the 154 grain Hornady and they are too long to seat properly for the 2.8" max overall length. Gave those projectiles away and got some Speers. I got my .284 at a recent show and am planning to load up some with 130 grain Speers. Good advice from all above and much appreciated. I will try these 130's and let you know the results. Thanks, Larry

Larry good luck with that rifle. I'm also assuming you have the upgraded firing pin? I believe Winchester still honor's that recall.....

BSA: One used to be able to go to a Winchester page, enter the s.n. and get a reply. I was unable to locate that site so guess I need to call them as I do not know if it was upgraded or not. Thanks for the reminder!

I used to have the info, but it's been a few years since I've done one...

This used to be the contact info. It may still be the same. I'd call them and check to be sure. If they still honor the recall, they will send you a $30.00 gift card as well:

or write them at:

I load for 2 Model 100s in 284. Make sure that you ram the case in the sizing die until cam over when sizing. I had cycling problems until I realized that I was not fully sizing the cases. I also went to a RCBS small base die which might be over kill.

The load below works well and is accurate in both my 100s. I suggest that you work up your loads starting with min powder charges.

COL 2.81
120 gr Nosler BT bullets
55.8 gr. H4350
Federal 210M primers

To check if the firing pin has been upgraded, try to turn the pin. If it turns freely, it has not been replaced. The new design has a flat that keeps the pin from rotating.

Simply BECAUSE it's a semi-auto... They're designed for very specific pressures and shell dimensions.. ANY variance in those will result in performance issues and/or damage to the firearm..

Reload for bolt-actions, lever-actions, single-shots and the like; no problems... I advise NOT to reload for semi-autos.. Yer just asking for troubles...

Guess I've been lucky. I load for my Garand, my Ruger .556, my brother's M-1 Carbine and his Model 100's in .243 and .308. No problems. I full length size, stay away from max loads and factory crimp everything.
