now that is a 358 Win. Sent a Savage LWH in 6.5 to JES Rebore on 4-11, arrived today. Shortened bbl to 16.25" as well. 5 lbs 14 oz empty with Leupold Big Bore 3x on it with Deadnutz ring base. 6 lbs 2 oz with 4 rounds of ammo.

Can't wait to get it out and shoot. They said it seems to shoot fine. We'll will find out when the weather cooperates.

I like it! What projectiles will you use? Twist rate?

It is the 3 groove rifling by JES. Never have questioned the twist rate from them. Every 358 (4 now) that I have had from them have been very accurate. I will probably just use the Hornady factory load as I don't reload.

Awesome...I recently had JES turn one of my Kimber Montanas into a .358 win and chopped down to 16.25" barrel as well!

Fun little gun for sure. Super handy and easy to carry. Don't like the short barrel fool ya (as you already know owning for 358 win now) they can still bring the heat.

225s at 2400 fps

160s at 2800 fps

And everything else somewhere in between. Hard not to like that. Inside 300 yards it'll just as flat as the 308 it was before with the same weight bullet and do it with 4" less barrel to get it done too. smile

Not quite. My 18" 308 drops 5" less at 300 yards, is 325 fps faster with 160 ft lbs more energy when shooting high BC 180's.

The 358 with 225's has a 100 ft lb advantage at the muzzle, but the 308 passes it at 100 yards. Plus the better SD of the 30 caliber bullets means better penetration. I've never thought bullet diameter was important. Penetration and placement are the keys.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Umm I said with same weight bullets didn't I? But you didn't want to quote that part huh? smile

I didn't even mention how fast the 180s I loaded got going. If we were trying to compare same weight bullets.

Also what is your load for getting 180 grainers to 2725 fps from an 18" barrel? I'd like to load up my wife's 308 with that, but the best I can get is 2650 fps with her 20" barrel.

Gotta agree penetration and placement is key. I don't think either caliber would have any trouble penetrating all the way through. I have seen about 20-25 moose shot with a 308 so not worried about penetration limitations on either caliber. smile

Savage has really stepped up their game, I'm really liking some of the newer rifles being offered and they can shoot!

Can't get away from those expansion physics....same case, same weight bullet, same pressure....that bigger bore is more efficient, especially in shorter barrels.

Do you know if it could have been cut to 20" and still have enough barrel thickness to bore to 358?
