This photo shows my Glenfield model 30GT which was bought new in 1979. It has put a lot of meat on our table over the years. I loaned it to my young friend and he toppled this huge doe firing just one shot at approx 85 yards or so. The Glenfield line of models by Marlin were sold a little cheaper than "regular" Marlins due to birch stocks and minor production shortcuts. But they're quite accurate and reasonably priced on the used market.

I love stripping the birch stocks. Then spar varnish them au natural. Blonde.

I am lucky enough to have a Glenfield coming that I won on Gunbroker. For reasons unknown to me, I really dig the looks of a half magazine lever gun. I have an old 1936 Marlin chambered for 32 spl, but wanted a 30-30 and found one. Looking forward to spending a little time with it, and hopefully, taking it to Texas on the 2018 Campfire Hog Hunt in Texas.

Crimson Tide,

Nice snag on a 2/3 magazine Glenfield 30-30....a hard to find rifle. I have one, a Marlin Glenfield model 30 made in 65' or 66' and is the the most accurate 30-30 I ever shot. Shoots everything from 125 gr Sierra's to 170 gr core-locks. including the Hornady 160 gr FTX. under one inch 3 shot groups. I went through five 30-30's to find one that shot this well.

Good luck with yours.

Dr. Encore

I strongly suspect that your time spent at Harley and Bopps did a great job of improving your shooting, regardless of the rifle.

I'm here to help and I hope you appreciate it.

Steve

PS: I've heard on very good authority that if you buy a couple of rounds of beer for your buddies there that the accuracy of your shooting improves exponentially.

As I said, I'm here to help.

Steve,

Damn you.....my Marlin mania is all your fault, you planted the seed. If you hadn't taken a Marlin .35 rem on the first 24hrcampfire hog hunt in Tenn I would have likely avoided the lever action rifle. Yet Marlin lever action rifles seem perfect for us fellow lefty's. Having bought 5 30-30's along with four .35 the last 5 years I have swindled them down to one each 30-30 and .35....both will shoot sub-MOA. Having range time with the rifles that have left my gun room I have opined Marlin accuracy is 2 to 3 inches on average. The rifle's I have kept that are an exception to this.

I have been fortunate so late in life to find my perfect "Repeating Rifle" for a lefty shooter.......the Remington 7600.

Greg,

Well, you clearly fell in with a bad companion.

And I still have my 35 Marlin that continues to kill stuff quickly and cleanly. Lots of one shot kills for hogs and deer.

It does exactly what it is supposed to do. I bought it used from John Barsness here at the Campfire.

Thanks John!

Doc, It appears mine is a model 30 as well. I don't know what year it was manufactured, but the serial number is under the lever. I may do some google fu to see if I can come up with a year of production. I have mounted a Williams Peep Sight and hope that the rifle shoots OK.

AD62xx makes me think, after doing a little googling, that mine should be a 1968 Manufacture.

Crimson,

Before heading to the range be sure the forend nose cap does not contact the barrel. A few swipes with a dremel tool is all that is needed.

Roger that, Doc. Thanks for the heads up. I found a box of Hornday 100 grain Half Jackets on my loading bench, and I think I'll load them up and spend the summer trying to get to know this rifle a bit.

Crimson,

My Marlin model 30 favors Hodgdon CFE-223.....shots sub-MOA with the Sierra 125 gr HP, Hornady 160 gr FTX and Rem 170 gr core-lokt. Not a commonly used 30-30 powder and just slightly slower than
Hodgdon "LVR"...

My limited experience hunting with the 30-30 was all with the 170 grain weight. I'm not opposed to trying the 150's, though. Matter of fact, Rockchucker and I were talking about shooting all summer with 150's and then switching to the 150 grain Barnes HP's for the pig hunt next spring.

Anyway, I like varget, and I use it for the 7mm/08 and 6.5 Creedmoor in the rack. It wouldn't make me mad to find a useful load for the 30WCF, too!

Book max load of IMR 4064 under the 170 gr. Siierra FP shoots sub MOA 3 shot groups out of my 336. Very effective on deer.

If you decide not to keep that '68 model, I'd like to know about it first. I have a couple marlins from 68 (same year as me). wink

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.
