Me too! I hope you're able to make it work one of these trips.

Nice!

The little narrow SX don't need a level wind and I prefer not having one. Even the wider spools don't take much thought to keep the line laying down properly.

Dan- you run any spiral wrapped rods? After using them, I like them quite a bit.

I tried to talk him into building one, but he decided to stay conventional with these new jigging rods.
With the small reels it's not much of an issue, but on rods with a large heavy reel, I agree with you, they do make a huge difference in comfort.

Congrats Dan, that's two good wins there! Hope to see you in Sept., if not on the water, for sure at the 'Tooth.

I have a Rainshadow blank and all of the parts ordered up for a 5'6" halibut rod. I plan to spiral wrap this one, and see what all the fuss is about.

I've debated building some spiral wrapped rods and the design does appeal. That said I think it's just as much a function of reel width as weight. When I was using Shimano TLD's a spiral wrap greatly appealed, but after ditching those for Avet JX's I haven't given the spiral wrap much thought.

You were right when you told me that I'd like the narrow spool of the JX over the wider LX we were running at the time. I dumped all of our LX reels, and we now run JXs on all of the jigging rods.

Why do you like the narrower reels? Less need to finger the line and overall weight?

The JX has room to spare for 300yds of braid and the wider reels torque the rod when you're cranking. The narrower reels are lighter and I've yet to find a jigging reel that was too light though I've gotten rid of scores that were too heavy.

That's kinda what I figured 458. Thanks. Now I'm gonna break out my wallet and see what the hoopla is all about. I'm always looking for a good (or bad) reason to buy more gear and now I've got one.

The winch doesn't belong on top of the lever, IMO, and a narrower spool that keeps the handle closer to the centerline helps the inherent issues with such a set up.

Running the line off the bottom helps as well.

To be honest, I greatly prefer a hanging winch(spinning reel), so I'm biased from the get go. That JX Raptor is a bad azz little reel though!

I run spinning equipment for my light and ultralight freshwater gear, but no matter how fancy I get with expensive reels and swivels, I still deal with line twists. I'm not ruling out operator error, but since 95% of my fishing is heavy saltwater tackle, conventional reels keep me nearly twist free....so I can blame the few tangles I do get into on other people. grin

Hah! Conventional reels do a lot of things right. Pretty sure my issue with them is all on me.

Anyway, great video! Thanks for sharing.
