Don't know much about it other than the heavy 20 caliber bullets are all running in fast twist barrels and the caliber of choice seems to be the 20-250.

Rifle purpose ? I shoot 20's..........W A Y overbore........

20-250.........? 38+ grs down a 20 cal tube.......? Dies ?

I had a 9T 20BR a few years ago.....that is more than enough overbore.......

it is now a 20-222.....luv it......23/H322 & 40 V max....but....I'm a high volume p/dog shooter........

my other 20's.....20 Fireball (Vartarg)..........20-223 (Practical)

The 20BR may suit your needs well........

I am not shooting one and have no experience with one but IMO barrel life would be very short. The 204 R's I owned started loosing the fine edge of their accuracy at around 2500 rounds, I cannot imagine that a 20-250 would be good for more than a 1000 rounds. At the price of barrels that makes the game more expensive than I would want to pay.

I had not considered barrel life. Thanks to all. I suspect this caliber would be at its best shooting 55 grain bullets at coyotes so it would not be a high volume barrel compared to a pd barrel. I shoot a 204 R as my main prairie dog gun now and am very pleased with it.

My main interest was to see if anyone here shot one as I am not familiar with the caliber at all.

I have another unrelated question but I'll post it on another thread.

55 gr Bergers are not much of a varmint boolit...thats what I ran when I used the 20 BR...

No p/dog red mist...alot of crawl offs...I ran 1200 rds outta the BR chamber...

Sent barrel back to Pac Nor & rechambered to 20-222...8 grs less powder every shot..

18# rifle has -0- recoil...40 V max works best in all three 20's.......the 20 VT & 20 PT were 204R chambers

when I first built them.......20's work very well on p/dogs & 'yotes........ grin

40 grain VMAX is my standard pd bullet. Do you use the 45 grain bullet on coyotes?

I'd love to know more about the .20-250 also. Hopefully someone who runs one will chime in.

I built a 20 Practical, just necking down the 223. I am using the 32 V Max predominantly.

Not redlining it. Main charge used is 22.5 grains of 2015BR.

Waiting for the weather to dry out farmers fields.. this year has been a real mud pit for farm land.

a few years ago, someone sent me an AI'ed version of the 20/250 with a 24 grain NTX lead free bullet
as a dummy round. He made it up to shoot this combo with Blue Dot.

was quoting me something like 4700 to 4800 fps...

IIRC it was a forum member from over on AR ( Accurate Reloading)... from down in California.

When I shoot out the barrel on the Howa Mini Action I have in 223 ( I have a pair of them), the replacement
barrel is going to be 20 Practical. The other is going to be a 17 Remington.

John, no other work is necessary to form 20 Practical brass other than necking down 223 brass?

If I may......neck down 223 brass to 20 cal......the dies I use are.......

223 FL die to size body w/o stem.....

Redding 223 bushing die with .227" bushing

Forster BR seater for the 204 Ruger......(or 223)

brass of your choice........Rem 7.5 primer for me.......your favorite 223 powder.........

I use H4895......25-26 grs.......moly 40 V max........expect 3850-3900 fps..p/dogs die fast...

Its 'Practical' most guys have 223 dies of some sort....Benchmark also works very well....

Cliff,

its so simple I virtually bought one die to change a 223 to a 20 Practical.

That was a 20 caliber universal Neck Sizing die from Hornady for about 20 bucks.

Like TikkaNut, I remove the spindle from one of my 223 dies, and full length size it.

That brings the neck down enough on brass to use the Hornady Neck sizing die.

After shooting it, the load I use allows me to deprime it, with a Lee Depriming die.
If the shoulder needs knocked back after a couple firings, I use a Redding Body Die
that I already had for my 223 brass.

For seating, any of my 223 seating dies work just fine.

I get a couple of firings before I have to re do the neck with the Hornady Neck sizing die.
I lube the inside of the neck with a Q Tip.

Really isn't much to it.

I am sure the Redding Bushing dies would work great, but the Hornady die does just fine.

The barrel and the load, shoot itty bitty groups at 100 yds.

If I feel the need to rocket it, I use a stiff load of 2015BR and a 24 grain NTX Hornady.
That is in about the 4600 fps range.

I have a good friend and coyote hunting partner who ran a 20-250 for a season. His was a 9 twist and he shot the 55 grain Berger i don't remember off hand what his load was but i remember that it was very fast. His longest coyote kills on bedded coyotes were over a 1000 yards. On paper and in the field this thing was fantastic however it was almost to much of a good thing at times as the barrel was toasted rather quickly. The other factor was that was that when it was below 0 the 9 twist wasn't quite fast enough for extreme cold weather. Overall it was a wicked coyote rifle and the pelt damage was minimal but barrel life made it a no go after that first barrel was toasted.

Yeah Cliff, as I don't see a difference in running a 223 with a 40 grainer and a 20 Practical with a 40 grainer.

Hence the use of the 32 V Max and the 24 grain NTX.
