I bought some 20ga federal heavyweight ammo yesterday but didn't realize till I got home that I bought #6 shot and not the more common #7's. I've read many favorable reviews on the #7 load but I don't think I've really ever heard anything about the #6's. Anyone have experience with the heavyweight 6 load? I haven't patterned the load yet but heavyweight 6's should hit like a hammer.

I use 7's and have some 6's-- pattern the 6's and I'll bet ya that with the proper choke you will be killing Toms at 40+ yds with those 6's --- proper choke tube a must- Web

The gun actually belongs to my girlfriend and she has a Turlock choke ment for heavyweight 7's in it now. We weren't ambiguous enough to get out and shoot in the rain today but hopefully it patterns well. Honestly at 40 yards the heavyweight 7's pattern better than the cheap 12ga 3.5" nitro turkey #4's that I've used with good success for years. If the pattern looks anything like my #4 load I'll be happy.

Me and my buddy's switched to 20gauge. He killed a bird @55yards this season with it. Code black choke with magnum blend.

#6s will definitely do the trick!! I've shot my 870 20ga to 45yards with great results.

The HW 6s will work no doubt, but it's pattern density will not match the 7s as there's just not enough pellets. You'll still get better kill counts than lead at longer range. The penetration energy on the 6s is way overkill for turkey, but actually makes a great coyote load.

I agree that the Fed. HW #6s will probably work but there will probably be a diminished density pattern. I shot turkeys for years with a 12ga and #6s with several different guns and tubes but the pattern density was never anything like the 20ga Fed HW #7s. One pattern board made me a believer. Each succeeding board confirmed what I first saw.

My 870 in 20 guage with Remington Xfull choke loves those Fed HW 6's! Not so much with the #7's. I am sure the right choke tube would change my tune, but haven't found it yet.

I am sure this is Spot ON. I have seen posts on other websites which detail that FED HW #7s will shoot lights out with "X" choke tube, but not so much with "Y" choke tube.

Pattern it. If it's nice and tight, the HW6 will certainly kill a turkey to 60 yards.
