Been shooting in some prone rimfire matches here in WA 100 yard and 100/200 yard matches (bipod and rear bag) for several years now. I think I've squeaked the most I can out of my 77/22 (Shilen Varmint barrel.) and I"m not keeping up with the big dogs who have mostly gone to Anschutz.

I'm thinking of the aforementioned Anschutz. At $2100 - 2200 for the rifle with the two stage trigger, I'm now thinking if a custom gun on a 40x, Turbo or some other action with good named barrel and a decent smith to spin it together ..... am I into it for more than $2500 including stock? Are Anschutz like any other rifle ... a crap shoot, except with better odds?

Will I noticce the accuracy enhancements off a bipod?

I have never had a "bad" shooting Anschutz but I have had some that shot better than others. IMO it is more of a case of the shooters ability and expectations. Personally I would look at some used ones, there are a quite a few of the 54 series out there for less than $2200 but on the other hand buying retail does give bitching rights. Not sure if you will notice the accuracy enhancements off a bipod, except the Anschutz will have a much better trigger and trigger control is a big part of any competitive shooting.

There are crappy Anschutz barrels out there, but they are a barrel swap away from being an excellent shooter. I have a Anshutz1910 and it's very accurate but the 1607 I have does not shoot well with the facctory barrel and it will be swapped out. If I were to do it again, I think I would get a Stiller 2500x action and build off that. I think they are making a repeater version as well.

As much as I love my 1710 HB, if I were serious about competition, I'd put the money into a custom build.

Make friends with the top competitors in whatever competition you are in and try their guns,and pick their brains about what they have and what they want.

I have 7 1700s right now, and probably owned 20 over the years. Custom barrels are superior for accuracy with various ammo. I use mine for silhouette and it is easy to say a custom is better.
