Try 140... nothing much living can handle 125...

It's not a matter of killing the bacteria, if they'd already made the Botulism toxin, you're still up a creek. It's an extremely powerful poison. Not sure what temp can actually destroy the chemical.

140 does it handily...

There is no vaccine for C. botulinum, and anti-toxin is not useful for prevention. Heating to high temperatures will kill the spores. Temperature greater than boiling (212°F) is needed to kill spores so pressure cookers are recommended for home canning (reaching at least 250-250°F). The toxin is heat-labile though and can be destroyed at > 185°F after five minutes or longer, or at > 176°F for 10 minutes or longer. Boiling homecanned foods for 10 minutes or longer is recommended.

It actually takes about 160f to kill most foodborn pathogens. Those little botulizers must be some tough cookies.

The toxin is destroyed by boiling. The problem is that its a bacteria that produces spores and it takes 250F to kill them. At home, you need a pressure cooker to do it. Either acid or salt will kill them, too, which is why only low acid foods, like meat or beans, need a pressure cooker for canning.

Those numbers include HUGE "fudge factors" for safety and have nothing to do with what kills the toxins or the spores.

You won't find botulinum in creek or lake water. Just bring it to a boil and you'll kill everything in it. They used to say to boil it for 10 min or something like that. Nonsense. The bugs start dying at about 160 and by the time it boils, they're all dead. You don't even have to get it to a boil but most hikers don't have a thermometer with them so bringing it to a boil is an easy way to do it.

Probably the only 'natural' or 'organic' thing in the nachos and it's what put her in the hospital.

Apparently, it would be perfectly safe to slather it on a Bible and eat the whole thing, however. (Provided you were on Death Row.)

That place is an absolute shart hole. Been by it a few times on the way to go fishing.

Wife runs a c-store/gas station. They used to have a cheese/chilli machine for hot dogs. Small place, rural, they got rid of the machine, it ran so hot that without frequent use it burnt the cheese and chilli. And no, the chilli did not have beans, it was for hot dogs!

I also like to live dangerously......... I had gas station egg rolls today. The cheese heater thing does not scare me much unless it has a hard ring around the edge...

Some foods aren't. Years ago I had an old beater camp trailer. My son and I used it on a hunting trip, then we used it for storage for the next 10 years. I know how long it was by the license plate. I decided it needed cleaning out and in the icebox I found an unopened pound of margarine. It was just like it came from the store. It hadn't molded or anything. Anything that could last that long isn't food. It's plastic. I haven't knowingly eaten margarine ever since.
