Finally got me an old 32-20 WCF Smith. Haven't made my first kill with it yet, but have done a little shooting. With older factory Remington, velocity ranged from 615 fps to 738 fps !! Groups were horrible at 25 yds. Handloaded a few, they are clocking just over 1000 fps and took the group size to 2" at 25 yds. This pistol needs some tweaking, and I have to do something about the sights. All in all, its a great pistol for 100 years old. Notice on the bottom right hand grip, a rat carved his initials in it.

Ross Seyfried wrote an article in Handloader about S&W's like these entitled "Kinder and Gentler Smith and Wessons." I've always thought that summed up these guns. Fun to shoot, easy on the hands, and capable of good results within reason.

I almost bought one, once upon a time in Kansas. I felt a bulge in the barrel though. There was a Colt, I suppose an Army Special or the like, at the same place in the same caliber. Same thing. They were cheap.

Of all the S&W's I've worked on over the past few decades, for some reason it's not uncommon to find a .32-20 with a bulged barrel. Far more bulged barrel .32-30's than any other cartridge. The gentleman who trained me on S&W's almost 30 years ago once told me the reason for this, but I've long since forgotten the reason he gave me...Of course, I don't remember what I had for lunch yesterday either.
