Looking to get a traditional wood stocked compact rifle. I've narrowed my selection down to the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Compact Vs. the Remington Model Seven LS (laminate).

I'm a Remington man, so I've always leaned that way. Haven't had much experience with Winchester's built by FN Herstal. I've had the Featherweight in .270 Win and a 6.5x55. Also had the Model 70 Carbine in .270 and .223. All of these were from US Repeating Arms.
I've also had plenty of Model Seven's and M-673's.

Not to concerned about the rifle being a ultralight. Also have other guns with synthetic stocks that serve that purpose, and not looking to build. Just buy and shoot.


Anyone own a newer Winchester and has "Yeoman's" point of view in comparing these firearms ?

Win Model 70 Featherweight Compact

I have two of the M70 FWT's albeit they're the earlier 80's push feeders. One a 7x57 and the other a .257 Roberts. They are in the top 10 of my favorite rifles and the last two I would ever sell. I just never cared for the lines of the Model Seven although I have shot a few. Nice rifles.

Depends. If you're looking new, I'd skip the M70 compact. It's short but sure as hell isnt light. The New Haven models were a bit trimmer.

The M70 F.W. Compact is about 6.5 pounds.

I have New Haven model 70 compact in 7-08.

I doubt it's that light, if that's what the specs say. I sold mine so I can't weigh it. It was heavier and chunkier than my M700 Mt rifle DM in .280. I have a Nee Haven, pushfeed get in 7x57 that is also lighter and trimmer than my compact was.

Unless people actually put rifles on scales they are often way off with weight estimates. Everything else being equal (barrel length, cartridge, etc.,) a Remington will weigh about 1/4 lb less than a Winchester. But if the Remington comes with the laminated stock in the photo it will be heavier than the Winchester in the walnut stock.

I've weighed New Haven and current Winchesters, the current rifles have aluminum triggerguards vs steel on the older guns. The new Winchesters are about 2 oz lighter than the New Haven models in same cartridges and barrel lengths.

I'd choose the Winchester by a wide margin.

i believe the model 7 has a noticeably longer LOP.

And that is critical to me. I do not like the way compact stocks got to the shoulder at all. I'd get the gun with adult dimensions.

I don't have a compact Model 70, but have a bunch of the regular Featherweights and a couple of the Model Sevens. A short action featherweight just plain handles better than a Model Seven which has a large amount of it's weight in the buttstock.

Model 70 Compact Featherweight by a mile, IMHO.

Having had both, go with which one you feel balances best and looks nicest. The Seven laminated will be butt heavy. The Winchester will be neutral balance.
