I have always preferred a double base mount on my bolt guns. Now, I am considering a single piece Picatinny style base. But, I don't want to crowd the loading port.

What is your opinion?

You should be fine. I'm assuming it's for one of your 300 WSM's? I had one on my FN PBR XP 300wsm and it worked flawlessly with no interference for loading or ejecting...:


Worked just fine on this Winchester CRF, but may not if it were a Sako 85... YMMV..

I had a single on a push feed .257 Roberts. I couldn't tell it was there when loading or ejecting unless I looked at it. No problems.

Should work just fine. Yes for top loading actions there might , notice I said might, be some restriction but I have never noticed it much and I don't usually have to reload at high speed anyway. The difference imho is purely cosmetic. Pitcanny rails are butt ugly to me so I don't want one unless it's an AR which rate the same on the cosmetic scale imho but I'm an old walnut blue steel nice cut checking sort of guy and ymmv which is fine.

My only beef with 1913 rails is that they add more height than a lot of other mount systems. I use something else when I want the lowest possible mount.

I like the Talley two piece, nice clean look. I have shucked all the Leupold-Redfield one piece mounts. Talley's hold zero really well.

Why switch if the 2pc bases have worked for you in the past?

1-piece don't allow you to slide your fingers under the scope to use it as a carry handle.

Good point.. . I actually prefer the 2 piece bases like Leupold DD's and burris z-rings or even weavers, but I thought reloader was wanting input on the one piece picatinny rail...

One piece rails look wrong on a nice rifle in my opinion

Y'all are all correct. I have used two piece bases because I like using the scope tube as a carry handle. They also are more pleasing to the eye. The rail was simply a consideration.

I have both but I guess I always thought the one piece base would be "straighter". Most of them are notched for the loading port so that shouldn't be a problem. I think the 2 piece bases look cleaner though.

I like one piece. Easy peasy.

Several Dnz game reapers on rifles. And the latest wears nightforce one piece.

I used to use 2 piece. Now almost all I have are using DNZ one piece. I just got tired of lining up 2 piece rings.

Depends on the intended use.....my varmint rifles have them,,,,except the sakos....no point on a hunting rifle really.....unless it is a long range rig then I would as it will help stifling tha action and also with lapped in rings it take stress of the scope....
But your 2 piece rings should be shimmed and lapped also....

Two big advantages for a 1pc rail is that the multiple slots offer a lot of flexibility for mounting scopes of various lengths and the use of (equally flexible) weaver style rings.
