Alright, shot the rifle today. It was a scorching South TX. day, 87 with stupid humidity. The rifle shot and functioned well. Prior to going out, I mounted a leupold VXII 3x9x40 in low rings and a redfield one piece base. For my loads, I used IMR 4064, Federal brass, Federal 210M primers, 150 gr. FMJ, and 150 gr. Sierra game kings. I loaded up some 150 gr. FMJ with the IMR 4064, to get me on target and close. I then tried the 150 gr. SGK with two separate charges of 4064. The brass and primers showed no signs of over pressure... being so hot today this is when it would've showed up. Both loads were under MOA. I think this is pretty awesome considering I did virtually zero load development. The 53 gr. Load shoots well in my Remington 721, so that's how I came up with that one. Thanks, Chance

30-06?
I believe this is typical with pre-64 M70's.
I have only owned four and currently have three and they have been as accurate as most of my custom barreled rifles.
My experience matches yours and load development has been easy.
The late BobinNH always said the pre-64 barrels were the equivalent of a cut rifled custom and I believe him.

Nicely done! I have had two 06 fwts, both shot like yours. I am hoping my 270 fwt shoots as well!

I always love threads like this. Thanks for sharing this with us!!!!! Awesome shooting. I wouldn't change a damn thing. If you decide you want to take that rifle elk hunting, I'd suggest playing around with some 180 and 200gr. Nosler partitions... PM me your address, I'd like to send you a front hood for that rifle, if you don't have one yet....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

52gr 4064/ 150gr bullet in an 06?? Who'd a thunk that load would work? Good place to start, and often the place to end! Congrats on a great rifle!

It's a Condor mat. I have a couple of them and use them for my duty rifles. They've worked really well.
bsa: I will definitely send you my address, thank you!

It's official then. I said if it functioned well and was accurate that you made a heck of a deal. You made a heck of a deal!
Props to BSA for gifting a front sight hood!

And there are those that would tell you to glass bed it. My 1947 model in 30-06 love Winchester 180 grain factory ammo. With a 6 power leupold Alaskan, it will shoot 3/4" all day. Always wanted to put a big scope on just once and see how small the groups really get.
BSA 1917 mentioned a front sight hood and I have a question. Is anyone familiar with the pre war model 70 sight hoods? They are not the same as the post war hoods. Does anybody have a close up pic of a pre war sight hood?

IMR 4064 and Sierra Game Kings shoot well in my pre'64 FWT .30-06 too. I am shooting a 165gr. Nosler Accu Bond, they gave slightly tighter groups than Ballistic Tip Nosler or Sierra GK in my rifle. IMR 4064 has been my go to powder in .257 Roberts and .35 Whelen M/70's for several years now. While IMR 4350 gave good results it has been hard to find thus I will be loading IMR 4064 in my .30-06.

Very nice. You just have to love how well those old P64's perform. Mine shoots real well with just the littlest bit of load work as well. I was only a little surprised, but as someone mentioned, when I got it Bob said "Don't worry Scotty, it's a P64, it'll shoot"
