What lever gun will handle a longer 44 cartridge? That is cartridges loaded with Keith Style cast bullets. I think the Marlins can be modified to work, but...

All I've shot in my 92 Winchester is 240 and 255gr SWC. Zero feeding problems.

Thanks.

BTW: I've stepped into quick sand once. I was surprised no doubt. I threw my rifle onto what was dry ground and then lunged the best I could to had ground and pulled myself out. It was up to my knees.

I guess it is a concern!

The 92 of course has that dang tang safety, which isn't needed, but otherwise is a very nice rifle. You can see everything happening right there in front of you when you work the lever. Slow or fast, the SWC's feed just fine.

I had a Marlin 1894 in .44 mag that would not feed the Keith 429421 250 gr bullet. Round nose and ranch dog mold bullets worked fine.

Bugger: Marshall Stanton at Beartooth Bullets has an article on modifying the cartridge carrier or lifter - can't remember which - by filing to accept a slightly longer cartridge over all length. Another problem with longer bullets in the Marlin is the slow twist rate of the barrel. Stanton also developed a 270 grain bullet which is the longest length bullet that can be stabilized in a Marlin.

Dang

I didn't see any negatives. So I ordered a Marlin. I do have a 320 grain mold that I was hoping to use. I'll look at that article, thanks. I also have 240 grain and 250 grain molds - they will do. My 44 Special (Colt clone) loves that 320 bullet.

Buds prices and the $75 rebate...

Marshall made some comments in Shooters Forum which caused me to think he wasn't knowledgeable. But in some areas he may know what he's talking about. I've not logged onto Shooters Forum for a long long time.

The 92 Winchester has a 1-26" twist. I wouldn't take a Marlin over it, rebate or no rebate.

very good write up here...

I have a Winchester 92 and like it!

I have a Colt 1873 P copy - a foreign make... I think I would have bought a Ruger if they would have come out with their 44 special before I bought that colt copy.

Generally try not to buy foreign... But will.

I had two Winchester 94 44 mags and they both did well with Speers 300 gr bullet even though they were 1-38".

Steelhead,

I also stepped into quicksand while walking along a lake shore. It was only hip-deep with a rocky bottom, but quite a surprise. Stay alert.

Cheers,
Walt
