Anyone use this combination on a bull elk or similar sized big game? Love to hear about your experiences.

41rem, Can't give you any real help with the 210. My wife is running the 225 TTSX's in her .338 WM. She's taken bear, antelope, deer, elk and moose with that round. All but one, were one shot kills. The 225 has slightly better BC and SD than does the 210, while giving up very little initial velocity. You'll quickly make that up after 500 yards of so. You should be happy with either! memtb

For two years I tried the 338 RUM. The rifle really liked 225 and 250 grn Partitions. It was an effective killer on moose, elk, and deer. I didn't care for the recoil.

I used a 210 GR PT in my 338 RUM to shoot a bull elk at 350 yards.
The bullet went through both shoulders and exited, leaving a golf ball size exit.
MV is 3200 fps and .5 MOA out to 500 yards.

And recoil is what, about 48 ft-lbs @ 18fps? (Assumes 9lb rifle, 95.0g powder.)

Longest shot I've taken was 487 yards, .338WM/225g AB @ 2742fps. 34 ft-lbs recoil @ 16fps. (8.3lb rifle, 69.0g powder.)

Some of my .45-70 loads are in the 48 ft-lb range and all I can say is "Ouch!" You're a better man than me! smile

Hey Coyote, Would you mind "crunching" the numbers for my wife's rifle. Weight 8-12 (scoped, loaded, with sling), 225's at 2950, 78.5 gr. of RL 22. Thanks, memtb

I settled on and used the 210-gr TTSX in a 340 Wby for many years with great success on elk and caribou. IIRC, velocity of my hand loads was ~ 3150 fps and longest bull elk kill range was right at 500 yards, though at least half were over 300, and some over 400. This experience should correlate with what you'd expect from the RUM. Of ten bull elk kills with this load all were one-shot kills with very short recoveries. Most dropped where they were hit -- of course they must be hit right!

And as with the 340, one must learn to be able to handle the RUM 338.

Edit to add: every one of these was a pass-through though I was careful about shot selection; in other words no trying to drive a bullet length-wise through the body. All were broadside or at an angle through the center of the chest with one across-canyon, wind-driven shot that hit and broke the neck rather than hitting the chest.

That comes in at 38.6 ft-lbs @ 16.9fps.

My condolences to your wife! smile

BTW, the calculator I use is "Point Blank". Mostly I use the old version, which I prefer, and I can send to you. Or you can download the 2.0 version, which is what i have on my laptop, at www.huntingnut.com. Both are free, but the new version has a 10-second delay when opening unless you register it or pay $10 or something. The new version is better at some things.

Thanks Coyote Hunter, She's not good for more than 6 to 10 from the bench... "NOT" enjoyable! But.... For hunting, she wants nothing else. She's had great success with it. When you have confidence in your firearm, it is a "good thing"!

And yes! If you don't mind, please send the link. Thasnks, memtb

I shot a big 5x5 at 50 yards with a 210 ttsx out of a 338RUM through the lungs, it worked but the elk still ran 200 yards! I should have aimed for bone.

I only killed one critter with the 338 RUM, a big aoudad at 250yds, but used the Nosler 180AB. It acted like a partition. I did use a 340W and the older 210xbt in South Africa and Namibia. I killed Impala, Blesbuk and zebra in SA and a couple of the big Gemsbuk in Namibia. I was pushing it 3200fps and it was an awesome round! Only issue I had with it was the 5.5# MGA custom rifle I had it in that had a "holes all around" muzzlebrake! It was "God Awful Loud" and the brake, while helping with recoil, caused the braking effect to mimic the air piston in a pellet rifle. This caused it to ruin two scopes, a Leupold V3 2.5x8 and a Zeis Conquest 3x9...on the hunt! I finished the hunt with a friends 300WM/180XBT. Upon return I had it rebarreled to 338WM, mag na ported instead, and only shot the 185xlc, which was "perfection personified" on a big cow at 250yds. ( I seem to kill a lot of game at 250yds and under!) In the other 338 RUM I had I used a heavier rifle with a different design brake ( howitzer type) with no issues. Good luck to you, either the 340W or the RUM are dynamite killers IF one can hang on to them, ha.

I shoot the 210 tsx over 95gr or R25 for 3250 fps in my 338 RUM. Recoil calculator says 37.5 lbs

Many elk and bears to its credit, all 1 per customer and none went far. All had golf ball sized exit from 100-450yds.

210 TTSX out of a 340 Weatherby on a 200 plus lb hog. Bullet went through both shoulders, quarter sized exit hole. I think it will be great for elk.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”
