This year I seem to have more moles than normal. I decided to try something different in my constant battle with them. I flattened all of the runs by stepping on them then mowed my yard. I armed myself with a S&W m&p 22 and started stalking. About a half an hour later I noticed a slight movement on one of the flattened runs. I slowly started my elusive stalk and was rewarded with a rather tricky shot at an estimated distance of 12 in. An hour later found me with another trophy. For those who have never tried it, they are not as easy to kill as it would seem. I have found it is best to aim about 6 inches behind the direction they are headed then start firing rapidly in the direction of movement. Even then, I sometimes come up empty. I suppose a 12 gauge would be more effective but I enjoy the challenge!

I found a well placed boot heel to be effective.

My grandfather would sit out in the yard and watch their runs, and when he saw movement, he would stomp the tunnel both in front, and then behind the mole. I like drowning them with a water hose stuck down the tunnel.

I believe those methods are effective but I just like activities that involve a firearm!

Moles are fun to hunt with a 22 or co2 pistol, anything that shoots fast and cheap really. It's even more fun to have a competition with ones cat to see who can get the most over the summer. The all time bull moose champion mole hunter of the house was a little gray tom who passed away over 25 years ago. He beat me by at least a 10:1 margin.

When I was a teenager we had a Siamese cat, Fart, that was hell on moles. Pretty fun to watch him stare at a mound, then next thing up to his shoulder in dirt trying to get his claws into the mole. Seconds later the mole would be up in the air and dead before it hit the ground. Great cat.
